he USA Volleyball Open National Championships offers a little bit for everybody involved with the sport and the 83rd edition of one of the most prestigious events of the year was no different. During the tournament conducted from May 26 to June 2 there were 29 different championships decided at the Salt Palace Convention Center, including the inau- gural championship of the USA Premier Volleyball League. The PVL is a grass- roots professional league built around the foundation of USA Volleyball’s 40 regions. A total of 12 regions entered teamns in the PVL bracket with the Hoosier Extermina-

tors claiming the $10,000 first-place prize behind some strong play from tournament Most Valuable Player Kanani Danielson. Other regions competing for the $20,000 prize purse include Arizona (Arizona Sizzle), Northern Californiad (Dream Team NCVA), Great Lakes (Team Great Lakes), Puget Sound (Puget Sound), Evergreen (Team Evergreen), Florida (Team Florida WAVE), Iowa (Iowa Ice), New England (Team New England), North Texas (Team North Texas), Intermountain (Utah Unity) and Western Empire (Western Empire). Lights Out (Great Lakes) needed an extra set to win the double-elimination bracket

Paul Mitchell, which did not compete in the 2010 or 2011 USA Volleyball Open Na- tional Championships, has won seven of the Men’s Open Division titles thi century and eight since 1994. The USA Volleyball Open National Championships have teams from 37 of the 40 USA Volleyball Regions. A total of 42 teams competted from outside the United States with 22 hailng from Brazil, 15 from Venezuela, three from Canada and one each from Mexico and Puerto Rico.
