USA’s Salvatore, Apol appointed referees for the 2012 Olympic Games in London

International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) to of- fi ciate during the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London.

T

Salvatore, an international referee since 1996, will be working her fourth Olympic Games, including third for indoor volleyball. She was part of the beach volleyball referee crew for the sport’s Olympic Games debut in 1996 at Atlanta. After eight years as a beach volleyball referee and delegate, she received her fi rst indoor volleyball assign- ment at the 2001 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship in Croatia.

Salvatore earned the right

to offi ciate in the 2004 Olympic Games indoor volleyball gold- medal match as the second ref-

eree, which she has cited as her greatest individual assignment. She earned her third Olympic Games assignment at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Salvatore has offi ciated every major tourna- ment in the quadrennial since 2002, including three FIVB World Championships events with two women’s events and the 2010 men’s edition. She has also offi ciated at the 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup after two previous appointments to the women’s event, along with assignments at the FIVB Grand Champions Cup twice. Salvatore has also served as an FIVB Men’s World League referee for the same 10 seasons.

Moscow Grand Slam.

Salvatore, who will retire from international refereeing at the end of 2012 due to the FIVB age limit set at 55, is the fi rst and only person – male or female – that has offi ciated for both beach volleyball and indoor volleyball at the Olympic Games. “London 2012 will be special as I fi nish my whistling career, knowing there are not only four other international women referees assigned, but many, many, more developing all over the world!” Salvatore said. “And, as I have always said, it matters less to me that I have many ‘fi rsts,’ if there aren’t more behind me, so that soon, we will only be looked at as very good referees, that just happen to be women!”

Apol will be one of seven beach volleyball referees making their Olympic Games debut. Af- ter picking up his international referee credentials in 2004, his fi rst international tournament with his international cre- dential was at the 2005 Acapulco Open. Since then, Apol has worked many FIVB World Tour events in addition to the 2006 FIVB Under-19 World Championships in Bermuda. He was the referee for the 2007 Pan American Games women’s gold-medal match. Further, he has offi ciated the women’s gold-medal matches at the 2010 Hague Open and 2010 Kristiansand Open on the FIVB World Tour. He also was fi rst referee for the men’s gold-medal match at the 2011

“Every referee has as his or her top goal to referee at the Olym- pics, and to become one of those referees at the Olympics means a lot to me,” Apol said. “When I was growing up, I was always fi xated on watching the Olympics every four years and now to take part in it is just unbelievable. The Olympics hopefully is not the peak for me. I feel very fortunate to get to this point. I was the one referee picked from the United States for the Olympic beach competition, but I am very honored to represent all the other referees and hopefully I can make them proud.” Apol, one of nine internationally qualifi ed beach volleyball referees in the United States, has served seven seasons on the FIVB World Tour with 300-plus matches offi ciated, along with 12 seasons at the national level. He has extensive indoor referee experience in USA Volleyball and college events.

“I would like to say how happy I am for Dan to be representing

the USA in beach volleyball in London as we have been friends for quite some time, and he just happened to be assigned all along on my ‘Goodbye to the Beach Tour’ in 2010!” Salvatore said. The appointments fi nalized a three-year period of evaluation, training and education of international referees at FIVB international events – World Championships, World League, World Grand Prix for volleyball; World Tour for beach volleyball.
