Speraw takes UCLA job after leading UC Irvine to third NCAA men’s title

J

ohn Speraw endured an emotional 30 days in May in which the lure of his alma mater

UCLA was too strong to deny. Speraw coached his UC Irvine men’s volleyball team to the NCAA championship on May 5 with a sweep of the University of Southern California in the championship match and was saying goodbye to his players less than one month later. Speraw, who will be an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Olympic Volleyball Team this summer in London, accepted the head coaching job at his alma mater on June 5. Speraw will be only the second UCLA men’s coach in history, succeeding the legendary Al Scates. Speraw, 40, played on two UCLA national championship teams as a player and was involved in two more as an assistant coach. He spent 10 years at the helm of UC Irvine, winning three national titles in the last six years. In the end, however, the lure back to his alma mater was too powerful. “As I walked around campus, I remem- bered why I chose UCLA years ago,” Speraw said. “I love the campus. I love the people

who work there and the values that we share. I loved my experiences as a student-athlete and a young coach and I’m very much looking forward to my experiences as a head coach at my alma mater. This is indeed home and I am excited to be back.”

Scates was happy with his pro-

teges’ decision. “I’m confi dent that John Speraw is the right man to lead UCLA men’s volleyball into the next era,” said Scates. “He has proven himself to be an outstand- ing coach both collegiately and internationally. UCLA is privileged to have him.”

Speraw called the decision extremely emotional after building the Anteaters into a national power. In 2012 UC Irvine knocked UCLA out of postseason contention in the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation quarterfi nals and then upended Stanford and top-ranked Southern California to qualify for the national semifi nals.
