Palmetto Region

Palmetto Region (SC) has initiated an ag- gressive promotion and challenge to its region clubs in order to get boys’ programs started for the first time in the region.

The Palmetto board recently approved a grant program to assist clubs who will start at least one team per club. In the first year, the goal is to encourage a number of the region clubs to plan for at least one boys’ Under-14 Team or younger. By starting the program with boys similar in age, it will provide av- enues for competition.

The inaugural year started with a short 10- week season with only four tournament dates to keep players and parents from being burned out and will keep cost down.

Palmetto has ac- cepted the challenge to keep cost to a bare minimum in order to get players in, get them excited about volleyball and make

it fun! So many potential parents say no at first mention of club cost before the child ever has a chance to try the sport.

Grants are awarded to the clubs that can keep the cost to under $250. Add in the grant and it can bring cost to under $200. Palmetto feels if parents are not turned off by initial price of normal travel club cost, they will give it a chance.

Evergreen region Growing the game took on a new meaning

for the Evergreen Region last fall as they part- nered with the Pacific Intercollegiate Volley- ball Association (PIVA) for an exciting season,

and that relationship will continue this year! PIVA represents collegiate club volleyball in the Pacific Northwest and strives to provide competitive volleyball at the collegiate level for students while building a competitive reputation at the National level. With the help of the Columbia Empire, Puget Sound and Intermountain Regions within USA Volleyball, a partnership was formed. The Evergreen Region had over 14 teams registered and 142 collegiate members. PIVA teams hosted tournaments within the region at Gonzaga University, Eastern Washington University and Washington State University. Through these events the region was able to pass on tournament-hosting skills, build relation- ships with coaches and players, and continue to grow the game!

The Evergreen- PIVA partnership

creates not only growth in collegiate club volleyball, but also a mechanism to keep play- ers active in the sport after high school and college graduations.
