departure gate – particularly for those airlines and airports that are seeking to offer “self-service boarding”. Wherever tools and technologies are deployed, these need to be in the hands of a well-trained professional workforce. Prior to the development of technology tools, immigration officers the world over were well-versed in detecting fraudulent documents simply by examining them by hand and with limited tools such as a small magnifying glass or an ultra-violet lamp. Indeed, such tools in the right hands, perform a useful function in deterring passengers from attempting to use counterfeit or fake documents. More broadly, and perhaps further down the road, the capture and verification of biometric data will increase the integrity of the overall identification process; and the images (photos) captured from travel documents can be automatically run against government-owned, law enforcement databases, loaded into visual analytic tools that can work hand-in-hand with CCTV cameras, affording us the opportunity to identify and monitor those persons of interest who may need additional scrutiny until we are fully satisfied that they do not pose a threat to the aircraft, its passengers and crew, or the country they are travelling to. As with all developments and transformations in the aviation industry,

the road ahead will demand effective collaboration among all industry and government stakeholders so that we can cost-effectively deploy enhanced document verification at multiple stages in the passenger journey and across the entire industry globally. And in doing so, we will recalibrate the balance between detection and identification; and sharpen our focus on bad people, not just bad objects.
