I get busier and busier as Natural Awakenings’ grows and changes and as I explore more of life in general (much of

that discovery based on the treasures I find in these pages!). So it is necessary to discipline myself to make time for healthy escapes, such as: visits with friends; fitness class (such as yoga at studios like this month’s back cover advertiser, Fresh Yoga); treating myself to a spa-day, massage or energy healing at an area practice (e.g.s: massage at the new Massage Savvy (see ad page 29) or Renew Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (see ad page 15), or a Healing Reiki session with Anita Jones (see ad page 9); a day-trip to New York City to supercharge my enthusiasm; or, a weekend in nature to soothe my soul and center myself. A healthy escape can be an afternoon reading, working in my garden, meditating and/or walking in a park or along a beach, and/or being conscious about unplugging from technol- ogy (my tv, phone, computer, etc.) for simple quiet time without interruption. And the great thing about that type of escape is there is no need for pre-planning or expense. In fact, all of us can enjoy healthy escapes every day! You’ll find some good ideas in this month’s news briefs, calendars and articles like Judith Fertig’s Healthy Escapes: Unplugged Getaways Rebalance Our Lives. Just as there are numerous ways to enjoy nourishing escapes, so it goes with

the variety of ways men can be come healthier. Information on men’s health, such as that found on Medline Plus, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, suggests men have higher rates of smoking and drinking, are often reluctant to get medical help, and incur multiple stresses with- out seeking avenues to diminish them. Healthy diet and regular physical activity are staples of good health, as are getting regular check-ups and screenings, be- coming aware of family history and signs of illness, and talking about all aspects of wellness. Even small moves toward health, such as choosing water instead of soda, or walking rather than smoking a cigarette, can make a difference. This month’s edition offers suggestions for men to fill life with meaningful, healthful activities (whether alone or with loved ones), include Clint Kelly’s ideas for creative ways to deepen father/kids connection during storytime, James Occhiogrosso’s informa- tion about boosting vitality via natural means, and Joe Robinson’s thoughts about rekindling the joy and vitality that comes with new experiences. For men seeking new avenues toward well-being, read on and here’s to your

health! For women who want the men in their life to stay well, feel free to share Natural Awakenings as every edition contains rich information for discussion and the well-being of both genders.

Wishing you all a Happy Summer! And a healthy, joyous Father’s Day to all dads and any man that gives of himself to improve the lives and health of the next generation!
