Huge Tannoy speaker installation at luxury coastal resort By Dave Robinson

ON THEsouthern coast of Greece rests Costa Navarino, the latest destination of choice for holiday - makers seeking understated luxury. Costa Navarino’s first area to be completed is Navarino

Dunes, comprising a number of facilities: two five-star hotels, the Romanos and the Westin Resort; the Dunes Course, the first signature golf course in Greece; the Anazoe Spa; the state-of-the-art conference centre House of Events;

facilities for children; and a variety of gastronomy, activity and sports venues.

Both quality and aesthetic have been major concerns for equipment installed at the complex; hence the reason, says Tannoy, why over 1,300 of its

loudspeakers have been used in the specification. The developers of this idyllic

destination called on the services of Tannoy’s Greek distributor Philippos Nakas SA, which won the tender to supply and install a system throughout the site. The project’s audio consultant

Gerasimos Efthymiatos said: “From the early design stages, our main aim was to provide a sound system based on CobraNet, giving the flexibility that such a system provides, distributing real-time digital audio from centrally located music servers to all different areas of the resort. Obviously for such a challenging project, high sound quality was a necessity. Tannoy was one of our first choices, providing both proper music quality as well as speech intelligibility.” “We had quite a significant

area to cover,” agreed Vassilis Drimouras, project manager for Philippos Nakas SA. “However, we knew that we couldn’t compromise on acoustical quality or sound levels.” Divided into 85 zones, the system features 32 Yamaha DME4io-C satellite DME units and 110 XH-200 distribution amplifiers powering a staggering 375 Tannoy CMS Series and 949 Di Series loudspeakers. The Tannoy CMS501 is a full

bandwidth, high power and high sensitivity ceiling monitor system; a compact unit that is designed for applications requiring the combination of “premium sonic quality for music and speech reinforcement and exceptional reliability”. The Tannoy Di5, the model primarily used here, is an

ultra-compact surface mount weather-resistant loudspeaker. “We chose the CMS501 loudspeakers as they are powerful enough to do exactly what is required, but once installed are discreet and blend well with the surroundings,” said Vassilis. “The Di Series was used mostly in the outdoor areas to provide a soundtrack to the experience on the resort, and again, because of their compact size, they are unobtrusive to the aesthetics.” The system is used to

simultaneously distribute 17 different music programmes through the CobraNet network. This ensures that the appropriate style of music is played in each location, from Italian music in the Italian restaurant Da Luigi, Greek music in the Greek restaurant Eleon, piano bar music in the Anax lounge, and so on. The system is controlled by a PC running Yamaha DME Designer software, while a hardware control panel –Yamaha CP1SF, CP4SF or ICP-1 – is installed in each zone, giving hotel staff domain over volume levels and programming choices. “As with any installation of this

size, there were some challenges to be overcome,” said Vassilis. “However, it would not have been possible to get to that point without the after-sales support offered to us by the team at Tannoy, and that is a very important factor in making this such a successful project.” www.costanavarino.com www.nakas.gr www.tannoy.com
