Helping operators to get a grip
The main focus of the Schenk Process stand was the unique SandPiper range of machines for automatically filling sand tanks on locomotives, trains and trams to serve sanding systems which aid traction and braking. Features include a petrol pump-style nozzle, an exhaust system to eliminate dust emission and an automatic cut-off when the sand box is full. The company claims that SandPiper is the only UK- designed and manufactured sand filling pumping system and has recently installed its products in this range for London Underground and at Southern’s Selhurst Traincare Depot in South London.
SandPiper products also include mobile sanding units
in powered pedestrian trailer and driver ‘sit-on’ versions which are suited to low usage depots. Customers for these have included Chiltern Railways at Wembley and Hitachi at Ashford.
Also on show
by Schenk Process were its MULTIRAIL products – the LegalWeight static or dynamic rail vehicle weighing systems, the BogieLoad measuring station and the WheelScan diagnostic system.
An example of the SandPiper fixed sand filling system was shown on the Schenk Process stand.
Optimum flash protection
Innovative arc flash protective workwear was presented by PHS Besafe. Its Arc:Gear protective clothing system is tailored to the needs of the rail industry, encompassing multi-layered garments to ensure wearers are given maxi- mum comfort and protection in the event of an electrical explosion. The company says that the range’s next-to-skin and mid-
layers offer unrivalled levels of breathability and movement and will not melt, drip or fuse on contact with an electrical arc flash. Outer high-visibility layers are manufactured from a durable, anti-static medium-weight fabric. A Gore-Tex arc- resistant outerwear option is also available. Arc:Gear workwear is designed to be cleaned and maintained at PHS Besafe’s Premier Arc laundries. Commercial Manager Tony McGovern says: “Our aim is to make the garment last for a long period so the cost for the end user over a two- or three-year period would be less than actually buying high-visibility garments, throwing them away and buying replacements.”

H&S award for Prolec’s Tandem Lifting solution
Safety systems and machine productivity specialist Prolec was winner in the prestigious Health & Safety category at the Infrarail Awards with its innovative Tandem Lifting option for its Liftwatch Rail technology. The award was pre- sented by music impresario Pete Waterman to Gareth Evans, Prolec’s Rail Industry Specialist.
Prolec proudly displayed its Infrarail Awards trophy on its stand.
The company’s Liftwatch Rail technology recently received European Type Approval and is the only safety control solution with this accreditation. “It’s a testament to our hard work over the past two years ensuring our rail safety products are as safe as possible,” says Evans. “This includes type approving the Liftwatch Rail system and developing this solution to a problem with an operation that has presented challenges for many years. With this insightful industry recognition, we now look forward to developing our products further to maintain Prolec’s lead as the safety innovator.” Tandem lifting is an increasingly common rail maintenance application where two machines work together. Without unified control the risk potential arises when one machine is motion-cut by its rated capacity controller due to overload, and can then pull over its partner machine. An option for its successful Liftwatch Rail product, Prolec’s Tandem Lifting Module deploys a secure data link to combine the safety systems on two independent machines, enabling operation in concert to maximise safety by ensuring that hydraulic motion cuts are invoked concurrently on both machines. Type Approval certification is a notoriously protracted,
time-consuming and costly process,” explains Evans. “But our successful certification last September for Tandem Lifting adds to the range of critical real-life applications that Prolec customers can deploy with confidence. As the market leader, it’s only right that we deliver a certified solution to keep equipment and operators safe – and it seems the industry agrees!”
