SigAssure scoops award
The winner in the Signalling & Telecoms category at the Infrarail Awards was SigAssure UK, which collected its trophy from rail ambassador and music entrepreneur Pete Waterman. The award was made for the company’s range of sigMTIFS (Modular Technology Interface System) Plug & Play products, developed as a direct response to Network Rail’s call for more efficient and time saving signalling innovations.
Since 2008 more than 12 separate innovations have been created, all developed by SigAssure’s dedicated team, including manufacturing and quality assurance in the UK. First trials of the range on behalf of Balfour Beatty Rail are due to commence soon as the last stage in the journey to gain full Network Rail approval.
SigAssure’s Managing Director Richard Merrills presented the sigMTIFS range of Plug & Play products on the company’s stand, with the award trophy just visible at the bottom of the image.
SigAssure also showed its sigMALP Mobile Area Logistics Platform as part of the On Track Display. The Network Rail-approved modular unit is, at 22 kg, light enough to be handled by one person and has a capacity of 50 kg, or 100 kg in tandem mode. An insulated version is offered for London Underground use and a gauge-adjustable model for worldwide use also features in the range.
Aluminium access systems now in kit form
Aluminium access and maintenance platforms for rail ap- plications were exhibited by Sapa Profiles UK. It pro- duces safe, lightweight access systems for safe working at height, with all manufacturing undertaken under ISO9001 and ISO4001 Environmental, OHSAS 18001 and FM 00435 quality procedures. The firm says it has been estimated that if a scaffold structure is to be erected on more than three occasions, a bespoke aluminium product will prove more cost-effective.
In response to customers’ cost constraints in a difficult economic climate, and as a direct result of Sapa’s expanding global client base and the requirement to ship access systems worldwide, the company has introduced a ‘flat pack’ option that offers significant savings. Its in-house design team has developed what is essentially a ‘kit’ system. Rather than shipping ‘fresh air’ with a fully assembled access system, the flat-pack product is space-saving and therefore simpler to ship. However, once assembled, functionality, strength, sustainability and safety are comparable with a traditional, pre-assembled system. The developed product also offers the option of having the component parts anodised to enhance protection and the aesthetics of the system. The flat-pack option is tailored to each client’s specific requirements and built by Sapa engineers on site. The kit form can be a mix of bolted and welded systems depending on the design and end use.

Sapa adds that aluminium is corrosion-resistant and can be regarded as almost maintenance-free, adding to time/cost savings. At the end of their service life, aluminium products can be recycled with almost no loss of original material and Sapa offers a ‘buy-back’ facility for customers.
