Graduates ready to step up to the challenge

Survey fi nds time is right to offer more responsibility in the workplace O

ver a third (36 per cent) of recent graduates say they’d like higher levels of

responsibility given to them in their fi rst job, and almost one in fi ve (18 per cent) is ready to take on more opportunities then they are offered in their current role. This is according to a new survey by

UKSP, the leading information site for careers in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries. The survey, which interviewed

those who graduated in the last fi ve years, also found that almost 45 per cent believe they could have progressed quicker in their chosen career if given the right opportunities, with 22 per cent feeling they have less responsibility now than they thought

they would have at this stage in their career. Lesley Potter from UKSP

commented: “At a time of high graduate unemployment, employers should be making the most of the graduates they do take on – not offering them any opportunity could lead them to becoming disillusioned with their jobs.” However Dan Hawes from the

Graduate Recruitment Bureau, says graduates have to be realistic about the speed of their career progression. He believes that good employers

will run worthwhile graduate schemes which offer genuine progression and room for growth. He said: “Your ambition and energy will be recognised and rewarded,

down the line, but in the meantime you are starting at the bottom. Graduate fast-track schemes will be clear about how long it will take to reach management level – varying from one to two years – whilst for other fi rms it may even be quicker or more protracted. “You need to say ‘yes’ to everything

and build your skillset snapping up any training offered along the way. There are so many factors out of your control that affect your progress but what you can do is ask other managers how long it took them and the circumstances their promotion came about. “You might be surprised to hear the

varied responses and this will help you plan your timeline to success.” n
