On the move


For many new graduates, landing that first job may involve relocating entirely, often to a big town or city. Moving to a new area can be tough, especially when you’re on your own, so here are some top tips on how to find your feet and settle in quickly


Find a room to rent


The most important thing is securing a place to live and the chances are, if you’re a graduate about to begin your first full time job, you’ll be looking to rent a room in a flat or house share. There are a number of websites where you can look for accommodation – spareroom.co.uk, for instance, is a user-friendly site with thousands of rooms for rent across the country.

Another good website worth trying is www.flatshare.com. When searching for your ideal place, consider what you will actually take home, after tax and National Insurance contributions, and the amount you can realistically afford to spend on rent. It is also worth bearing in mind that the cost of rent will not include bills or council tax – unless already stipulated by the landlord or letting agency.


You may already have friends to move in with, but house shares with new people are a great way to broaden your social circle in an unknown town or city. It’s also worth asking your employer whether they can offer any assistance with helping you move if you are undertaking a considerable relocation to start work.
