intoPIX and Axon work on JPEG 2000 intoPIX and Axon have

collaborated in creating a range of new JPEG 2000 enabled broadcast products. Last month, intoPIX released its new generation of JPEG 2000 FGPA IP-cores supporting the broadcast profile (JPEG 2000 Part 1 Amd 3 — Profiles for Broadcast Application — ISO/IEC 15444-1:2004/Amd3). “intoPIX’s JPEG 2000 solutions enable us to further develop our long time delay products which are used for time zone compensation, profanity checks and +1/+2 hour channels,” said Rafael Peset Llopis, Axon’s vice president of Research and Development. www.intopix.com www.axon.tv

IPV integrates to Harmonic line-up

IPV demonstrated an integration with Harmonic’s video server and storage solutions at this year’s NAB. As well as showing the industry-standard IPV SpectreView serving proxies ingested by a Harmonic Spectrum server and transferred to an Omneon MediaGrid shared storage system, the demonstration also showcased smooth desktop editing using IPV’s tight integration with Adobe CS6 Premiere Pro. “IPV pioneered the concept of shadow browsing and frame-accurate proxies, and it has continued to innovate to help create modern broadcast workflows,” said Simon Eldridge, senior product manager at Harmonic. www.ipv.com

Canon magnifies With the introduction of the Canon Digisuper 80 and Digisuper 76, Canon moves the Digisuper benefits of high magnification together with a wide angle several steps further. Through its 80x zoom ratio, the Canon Digisuper 80 adds an extra 5x magnification over its predecessor, the Digisuper 75. An 8.8mm focal length gives wide angle around 5% more than the Digisuper 75, which was 9.3mm. The Digisuper 76 is the successor to the Digisuper 72. This new lens has a 9mm wide angle -3% greater than the Digisuper 72. It also has a superior zoom ratio -76 times compared to 72.

FXUK and National Geographic transition to Dolby workflow

By Jake Young

SIMON BRETT, UK director of Operations and Technical Facilities for the National Geographic Channel and FX, has eased into a file-based workflow with Dolby’s DP600 Program Optimizer. Programmed with preset folders by HHB Communications, Brett is using the DP600 for HD work and deliverables from several sources with varying formats for both VOD and direct to broadcast programming. “Decoding Dolby E files and

Chat about light entertainment: Belgian national broadcaster VRT has installed Robe ROBIN 300 LEDWash moving lights for its studio complex in Brussels, writes Melanie Dayasena-Lowe.

The initial batch of 42 fixtures were delivered by Robe’s Benelux distributor Controllux, co-ordinated by Belgian sales manager Bram de Clerck, and specified for the TV station by its Head of Technical Johan Bosmans. He had been impressed after seeing LEDWash 300s in action on shows, and they also came highly recommended by a number of others, including leading Belgian TV lighting designer Michiel Milbou, who specified them on his current design for popular prime-time entertainment industry chat show, Vrienden van de Veire. “I love the LEDWash 300 and 1200,” Milbou enthused. “The 300 is a cute, small, beautiful lightsource that can easily be incorporated into sets, and the 1200 is incredibly strong and powerful. Both have a nice beam, good colours and excellent whites”. www.robe.cz

required a complex audio water marking processes, and its development was facilitated by the DP600 system. “The app is driven by audio watermarks that trigger the iPad in association with sounds on the show. The triggers can only be created using non Dolby E encoded, discrete audio tracks, so the DP600 was the only answer,” Brett says. “When the tracks came back with watermarking in them all I had to do was sync them with the pictures, export my 5.1 audio as six mono WAV files and then drop them into the DP600 to create the master file.” www.dolby.com

Merging goes into OverDrive

By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

MERGING TECHNOLOGIES has partnered with Ross Video to redefine production automation. Ovation is a realtime mix engine combined with a media server and playout sequencer, designed by Merging Technologies. Able to manage over 300 audio channels through a maximum of 256 bus outputs, complete with EQ and dynamics processing, Ovation manages that and more in a compact 2U box. Ovation’s PC-based audio mixer and GUI interfaces has allowed Ross Video to incorporate the full audio system into their OverDrive control cockpit within its existing desktop space. Using the RAP protocol, they can use Vision audio modules and OverDrive to drive the audio engine directly while using the PC-based GUI by Ovation to provide status and deep control. “I am always so amazed what

Quasar and Neutron rigs and a professional crew. Combined with Ultra Prime and Optima DP lenses, the penguins’ world was filmed over five months. Sir David Attenborough said:

“I knew it would be mind- blowing, there are a number of extremely dramatic animals in

South Georgia that would look particularly astounding in 3D. The difficulties are huge but the rewards are huge too. With 3D you can convey the reality of what’s in front of the camera in a much more powerful way than ever before.” www.sgo.es

can happen from the most innocent and simple of beginnings,” said Johan Wadsten, Ovation product manager at Merging Technologies. “After getting in touch with Ross to discuss the potential of allowing the OverDrive system to fire audio cues from the Ovation for a ‘cart player’ style scenario, we gave them a demo and they immediately became focused on our VS3 mix engine as a potential for vastly increasing the flexibility of an OverDrive installation.” www.merging.com www.rossvideo.com
