ATEME kicks off ultra-HDTV plan
By Jake Young
ATEME, A global provider of compression solutions, has launched an ambitious research programme to reduce the bandwidth required for the delivery of Ultra High Definition Television using High Efficiency Video Coding. HEVC is the latest compression standard developed
jointly by ISO/MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) and ITU- T/ VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group). Currently a draft, it is expected to be submitted for final standardisation approval in January 2013 as MPEG-H Part 2. The primary goal of the 4EVER programme is to pave the way for the delivery of an enhanced high definition
television experience to viewers regardless of the viewing context (in the home, on the go, in public places and cinemas…), in a practical and inexpensive way. Initially a large part of the research effort will be invested in the evaluation of the television experience enhancement that can be offered from not just higher
resolutions, but also higher frame rates, increased colour depth and surround sound. ATEME’s objective beyond
this programme is the development of an encoding system that broadcasters can rely on for large-scale field trials all the way to commercial deployments of Ultra HDTV. The consortium expects to demonstrate a first complete Ultra HD production and transmission chain within one year, and several field trials are planned throughout the 4EVER project for sports events, music concerts and other live shows.

Crystal Vision TX four channels in 2U
By Jake Young
THE FTX-L 3G is a dual channel fibre-optic transmitter, allowing up to 24 channels in a 2U frame. It has two independent 3Gbps, HD or SD inputs, each with one optical output, and can transmit a serial digital signal down a fibre optic cable. The FTX-L 3G includes two input loop-throughs. These loop- throughs can be used to distribute the input video to equipment such as a picture monitor, or alternatively for system checking: if a signal path has a good input
and a faulty output, the engineer can use the spare output to check each stage of the system without breaking any of the connections, and so work out which cable or piece of equipment is broken. Safety features on the FTX-L 3G include a Class I laser that will automatically switch off if there is no video input or if the laser’s working parameters fall out of specification. Specially modified laser modules allow the FTX-L 3G to cope successfully with pathological test pattern signals.

Simon Lamont and Digby Milner were also named as head of Art & Production Services, and head of Special FX, respectively. The 5,000sqft water tank features above and below level shooting platforms, with a shooting platform to provide a natural sky and horizon line, while the studio space is large enough to house the multiple sets for an entire TV production.

Sound By Design opts for all digital microphones by Neumann at Prom Praise, featuring the All Souls Orchestra

Prom Praise does digital By Erica Basnicki
LONDON’S ROYAL Albert Hall experienced Neumann digital microphones for the first time at Prom Praise. Sound By Design (SBD), who for the past 20 years has handled sound duties for the event, used an array of Neumann KK 133 diffuse field omni mic capsules fitted to KM D output stages. A joint demonstration day held by Sennheiser and DiGiCo in March inspired the company to give digital a go. “Sennheiser’s Dave Wooster took us through the Neumann/Sennheiser range
The FTX-L 3G includes two input loop-throughs
and demonstrated the advantages that digital mics could offer us and also showed us how easily we could integrate the mics into our existing inventory of DiGiCo consoles by simply adding AES42 input cards to our racks,” said SBD’s Griff Hewis. “With analogue, it’s often the
case that you struggle with noise and unwanted artefacts over long cable runs. The difference using the Neumann digital mics was remarkable. The signals coming back were incredibly quiet and clean.”
