Epic goes 6K and promises 28K device By Adrian Pennington

WHILE COMPETITORS like Sony and Canon are moving up to 4K, Red Digital is to upgrade its Epic camera from 5K to a 6K sensor within six months. What’s more, Red has a 28K sensor in development. By year-end owners of the Red Epic will be able to upgrade their 5K Mysterium-X sensor to the Red Dragon capable of 6K resolution at 85fps and 15 stops of dynamic range, up from the current 13 stops. The new sensor may also be included in the Scarlett camera and will cost $6,000. “That’s a quantum leap to go to 15 stops,” said Red’s Chief Marketer Ted Schilowitz. “We already enable the current sensor to go from from 13 to 18 stops of High Dynamic Range but it is very difficult to find legitimate reasons to use it since there is

Tempest MasterBelt goes down a storm

By Melanie Dayasena-Lowe

CLEAR-COM’STempest2400 MasterBelt digital wireless intercom offers all the features of the Tempest2400 rack-mount BaseStation in a wearable package. The Tempest2400 MasterBelt provides mobile broadcasters the ability to coordinate and communicate hands-free within the form of a Tempest2400 BeltStation. The MasterBelt can be paired

with any standard Tempest2400 CP-222 two-channel BeltStation to

create a full-featured two-channel system in the 2.4 GHz band. The MasterBelt itself also functions as a BeltStation allowing up to six full-duplex wireless users to be in communications. The MasterBelt Station and all

Tempest BeltStations are protected by a durable, weather- resistant ABS co-polymer blend with a high performance polyurethane overmold. It is provided with a rechargeable Li- Polymer battery capable of up to eight hours of operation or can be

powered by three Standard AA Alkaline batteries as backup. “The Tempest2400 system

has proven itself as the go-to communications solution for remote productions operating interference-free even when other wireless devices are in the same vicinity,” said Craig Frederickson, Clear-Com wireless product manager. “The MasterBelt is the latest development in the Tempest2400 line, giving broadcasters an even more flexible alternative for

mobile productions, such as reality TV, sports side-line communications or ENG, where a stationary BaseStation is not desirable, feasible or optimal.” www.clearcom.com

range provided you breakout of the normalised photographic way of thinking. Imagine, if I can get a camera that does 20 stops of range what can I do with it? How can I manipulate images in production and in post to achieve effects that have never been seen before? It’s what

Ted Schilowitz

Schilowitz said Red also has 8K and 28K devices in development, the latter a super large format. “There are no limits to what we can do,” he said. “I am often asked why we need to go to 4K, 8K or beyond but that is not the right question. The question is what am I going

to do with a device that can shoot at a higher resolution than I have ever seen before?” “The biggest analogue format is Imax. What if we could create a digital version of Imax without the immense cost of shooting 15 perf film? What if I could shoot a movie like Lawrence of Arabia in VistaVision 70mm — but digitally? At that resolution I could make four or five different versions from one native source. I could manipulate the image in ways we haven’t even thought of.

“The industry is coming round

to what we have known for six years, namely that you can’t do much with 1080p. You shoot it and you live with it, you can’t do anything more with it. We are at a point where all other camera companies are thinking like Red. They are now where we were four years ago.”

A new world for Lawo SDI-Dock

The Lawo SDI-Dock bridges the worlds of audio and video with a channel density of eight embedders and de-embedders and 128 audio channels through MADI. 3G SDI embedders and de-embedders enable the use of any audio signal from up to eight video signals, as well as the integration of new audio signals into the video signals. Up to 16 audio channels are supported per stream. Even varying reference clocks between video and audio do not present major challenges due to sample rate converters in each embedder. The SDI-Dock comes with a frame synchroniser for each video channel that enables the use of different video formats at the same time. Each video channel comes with an integrated colour corrector and proc-amp to adapt each incoming signal to colour requirements. www.lawo.de

Remote connnection with Studer Compact Studer launched its Compact Remote Bay, a portable controller containing 12 motorised Penny & Giles faders and 40 rotary controls which link to a 19-inch touchscreen running Virtual Vista software. This emulates the console’s Vistonics user interface. As well as remote operation the Compact Remote Bay may also be used to extend the main control surface for a second operator on large shows. It can also be used as a standalone controller for the Vista’s DSP core should the control surface not be available, with the provision of connections for local 5.1 monitoring and a headphone output. Other new products from Studer at NAB included the new Studer Vista 1 Compact mixing console, VISTA FX Lexicon engine, RTW TM7 Metering Option for Vista consoles integral EMBER control protocol and an Axia Livewire AoIP card for the D21m system. www.studer.ch
