TVBEurope 55 NAB 2012 Headline News Ross Video, Harris & Avid

Social media trending at NAB

By Dick Hobbs

ONE OF the common features of the early NAB press conferences was a rush of announcements of ‘social media aware’ systems. It seems that the major vendors have finally realised the importance to broadcasters of a social media presence, and are now seeking to automate information feeds to Twitter, Facebook and others. Ross launched a new product to tackle the challenge, Inception. It puts the packaging

DVS NAB advances for Clipster and Venice By Jake Young

AT NAB 2012, DVS presented version 5.0 of its Clipster DI workstation. Visitors to the DVS booth experienced a sophisticated 3D workflow thanks to STAN (Stereoscopic Analyser) software that is now integrated into Clipster. STAN’s exceptional algorithm analyses and corrects the 3D material geometrically, including keystone correction. Along with its acclaimed Digital Cinema Mastering Tool, Clipster supports mezzanine files such as IMF, providing the digital master as a file package with different video, audio, subtitles or closed caption tracks. In combination with RAW cameras, Clipster assures massive flexibility — eg, by supporting RAW material from Red, ARRI and Sony cameras. Furthermore, Clipster supports formats like Panasonic AVC-Ultra, Sony SR, Apple ProRes 422 and Avid

process in the hands of the journalists and editors working on the news, so they have control over what happens and when. A particularly effective tool is

likely to be what David Ross termed the “call to action”: a tweet can be sent out at a pre- determined time before a story is broadcast. The message might, for instance, say “Breaking news on celebrity scandal: turn on your television now #XYZ TV”. With the Ross Inception system integrated into the newsroom, the story can be floating in the

running order, with the tweet sent a minute before it actually airs, even if that time continually changes. Avid put social media as one of

the key issues that viewers cared about, and also has new tools to bring the web and social teams onto the same production network as the broadcaster. For Harris, CTO Brian Cabeceiras said, “we have talked about ‘television anywhere’ for 10 years. Now all the technology enablers are in place. Broadcasters are no longer just broadcasters.”

like ingest, transcoding or playout, since they can be freely structured and processed automatically. Venice is now available in a 2U chassis offering space for up to 9TB of internal storage and up to four video channels.
