Handheld assault on ENG market

JVC IS to launch two new handheld camcorders, including one with built-in Wi-Fi/FTP capabilities for shooting and relaying news back to the studio as quickly as possible. “This is a major breakthrough in the newsgathering market,” said Kris Hill, JVC’s UK sales manager. “The main players like Fox, CNN and BBC have never had their ideal camera so we’ve been listening.” When the EBU published
new specs (in January 2012) which lowered the bit rate required for ENG from 4:2:2 50Mbps to 4:2:2 35Mbps JVC spied an opportunity to break the ENG camera market
dominated by Panasonic and Sony.
“These cameras record at up to 35Mbs however they have dual codecs — one for MPEG-2 long GOP which is one of the EBU criteria, or H.264 at 35Mbs which equates to 100Mbps at MPEG-2,” said Hill. “The GY-HM600 gives you
three CMOS sensors back illuminated with extremely low light sensitivity F11 at 2000 lux. Most ENG cameras feature 10 stops. It also features a professional three ring lens system and a 23x zoom.” It records high definition
footage in multiple file formats, including native XDCAM EX (.MP4), Final Cut Pro (.MOV),
MediorNet
and AVCHD, to standard definition cards. It is also able to wrap files in MXF to provide a simpler and faster means of validating files for across production. JVC is part of an MXF consortium — known as AS10 — of which Sony is the only other camera manufacturing member. The PAM2 MK2 delivers a new set of features for precision audio monitoring, including an SDI output connection to export display information to an external video monitor, a front-panel USB port for pre-set save/recall management and an Ethernet port providing network connectivity to web browsers and system management software applications. The new platform is built upon TSL’s existing PAM2 features, including loudness- compliance monitoring and audio delay to match video latency.
Linear Acoustic Loudness meter with decoding and Dolby
LINEAR ACOUSTIC introduced the LQ-1 loudness meter, an accurate metering solution for measuring loudness in digital television facilities. The LQ-1 supports all ITU, ATSC, and EBU loudness metering standards, and it includes Dolby Dialogue Intelligence to measure the wide dynamic range of long- form content more accurately. AES, analogue, and optional DVB-ASI inputs are followed by decoding for PCM, Dolby Digital
(AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus, HE- AAC (v1 + v2), Dolby E, and MPEG-I Layer II audio. The LQ-1 provides a selectable LtRt or LoRo downmix via the AES, analogue, and headphone outputs and supports metadata emulation and auditioning Associated Dialogue mixing.

The PAM2 MK2 is one of the first audio monitoring solutions to feature Dolby’s CAT1100 module, a new platform for comprehensive decoding and monitoring of Dolby audio formats that are used throughout the HD broadcast chain (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital and Dolby E). The new module will enable the PAM2 MK2 to perform Dolby E decoding and external speaker monitoring, as well as Dolby Digital Plus with surround descriptive audio and stream mixing.
