This month, IB catches up with Izabelle Hammon, founder of Izabelle Hammon Ltd, to find out more about how she broke into the industry and how she likes to spend her spare time.
I began working in the beauty industry…By default really. We had lost a business in the mid 90s back in South Africa and I wanted something to do from home as my children were still little and I had spent a year working long hours in the business. My Mum and sister had both trained as nail technicians and my sister Annalise paid for me to do a course with Bio Sculpture. I did nails from home for a few years before emigrating to the UK in 1998. I imported kits and did training in 1998 and in 1999 I became a distributor for Bio Sculpture. When Bio Sculpture changed their formula, I approached the Calgel distributor and was appointed exclusive Calgel importer for the UK by the end of June 1999 and Europe in 2002.
If I wasn't in the beauty industry I would…Help people set up businesses. I love business and there is nothing better than watching and helping succeed.
The best thing about my job is… Creating job opportunities and giving entrepreneurs a good product with great support to build their business and make their dreams come true.
An average day for me is…I don't have an average day. I have a great team, so I have the pleasure of working on the business instead of in the business.
My ideal weekend would be… Lingering chats and sharing good wine and food with people I care about.
My favourite book is…BLINK by Malcolm Gladwell. Powerful.
90 Izabelle Hammon
My favourite film is…Pay It Forward.
The most famous person I have met is…Richard Branson. I was on a Virgin flight a few years ago (I only fly Virgin - I got a sense of the man when I read his autobiography and love the brand). He walked around the plane and shook hands and a brief chat (not only with me). He then stood next to me whilst waiting for luggage and helped a sweet old lady with her suitcase. I wasn't surprised!
My favourite part of the world is… New York. Not only for shopping but feeling the energy of the lights of Times Square at night.
I could not live without…Seeing my children smile.
My favourite beauty treatment is… Head to toe body massage... especially my feet!
When growing up, my role model was…My parents. Both were entrepreneurs and had their own businesses. They displayed honesty, fairness and integrity to their staff and customers at all times.
I would like to be remembered as…Someone that inspires lasting confidence in others... just like the company tagline!
