UK Flood Barriers Put All Products to the Test as Flooding is Anticipated to Only get Worse


Many reports, including the 2012 Defra report, as well as recent Environmental Agency research, have all concluded that as a consequence of global warming, flooding is going to become a lot more regular, and potentially more devastating, occurrence in the near future. As a result, it is vital that flood defences are ready and able to withstand and survive natural forces far beyond that ever witnessed in the UK and ensure the safeguard of properties, businesses vital infrastructures and of course, lives.


Extreme flood events in the UK, such as those witnessed by the residents of Cockermouth in 2009 when the Rivers Derwent and Cocker both broke their banks causing over £200 million worth of damage, are at the moment still a relatively rare occurrence. However, they are anticipated to increase as the harsh effects of global warming starts to become a reality.

Here it is able to scientifically examine the boundaries and limitations of existing and prototype flood defences in a controlled flood environment, giving them first mover advantage in designing, developing and launching new innovative, patented products that are built to withstand high-level impacts, fast-flowing flood water and, the test of time. It’s testing also ensures that its products meet a high specification in terms of sustainability and impact on the environment.


Through this leading-edge facility, and as a result of it acquiring the sole distribution rights to many existing flood defence technologies, UKFB now offers an expansive and pioneering range of solutions – both of a passive and


reactive nature. Whilst reactive solutions require some human intervention to operate, its new product development strategy is to concentrate on the extension of its passive products which are activated by the power of the flood water, requiring no manual deployment and with minimal operational costs.

The Oosterscheldekering, in Holland is the worlds largest at 9km in length. It was initially designed, and partly built, as a closed dam, but after public protest huge sluice-gate-type doors were installed in the remaining four kilometres. These doors are normally open, but can be closed under adverse weather conditions.


The Thames Barrier is the world's second-largest movable flood barrier.


It needs to be raised (closed) only during high tide; at ebb tide it can be lowered to release the water that backs up behind it.
