the window. “The first thing we usually made was cof-
fee in huge urns. The waiters, porters, con- ductors and brakemen were soon ordering the steaming beverage. We made hot choco- late and put it in a crock in the steam table for instant service. Other crocks were filled with hot milk, hot cereal, sliced ham, bacon, and pork sausages. “The crew kept busy as more and more passengers came in to eat breakfast. We fried potatoes and eggs, and made toast on the charcoal grill. Mothers with infants gave their bottles to the waiters; we filled them with milk and heated them up. “As we served breakfast, we were already
making some preparations for lunch. I peeled potatoes, washed dishes and did everything the cooks asked, looking out the window whenever I got a chance. About 10:30 a.m., breakfast was over and the waiters asked for their meals. Most of them wanted an omelette (sic) of some kind, which made the chef mad. . . .” In the Black World, by

See works by Gil Bennett, John Cok- er, Jim Jordan, Peter Lerro, and others, who are known for their detailed realism, plus striking evocative works by such artists as Kevin Varty, Brad Faegre, and Angela Trotta Thomas. For variety, there is West Virginia wood burner Paul Ends, drilled wood painter Doris Jean Silva, and wood carver David Cunningham, who en- tered a six-foot long Reading 4-8-4 carved in walnut. The newest work showing is J. Craig Thorpe’s rendition of the Norfolk Southern PRR heritage paint scheme on Horseshoe Curve, shown here. The HUB Gallery is in the HUB-Robeson Center on Pollock Road in University Park (State College), Pennsylvania. A reception is planned for from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on June 8, and is open to the public.
