Serviceable North American Steam Locomotives 2012

Black Hills Central 2-6-6-2T No. 110 climbs the four per cent grade near Oblivion, S.D. Maine’s Phillips Historical Society contin-

FEWER LOCOMOTIVES are on the list this year than there were five years ago, but the good news is, most that ran in 2011 will again operate in 2012 and more are on the way. While there is a decided lack of “new” power coming into service over the next six months, this year will be remembered for the return of several favorites, including 2-8-2 No. 19 at Sumpter Valley; D&RGW 2-8-2 463 at Cumbres & Toltec; and Ham- mond Lumber 2-8-2T No. 17 at Mount Rainier Scenic. Also look for D&RGW 2-8-0 No. 340, vintage 1881, which is being over- hauled by the crew at Knott’s Berry Farm for a return later in the season, and Reading & Northern 4-6-2 No. 425, which has a good possibility of returning to steam before the end of the year. New Jersey’s Black River & Western 2-8-0 No. 60 was test steamed last year but has not yet entered regular service. With the closure of the Yreka Western, it’s

An Unscheduled, Unhurried Look At Dixie Steam Railroading

From the famous to the obscure, Extra South ex- plores the days of steam railroading in Dixie. Starting with the Wreck of Old 97 and continuing to the Tweetsie, H. Reid weaves the tales of the railroads and railroaders

in an entertaining and delightful fashion. The book concludes with a selection of black & white pho- tographs of main lines and short lines taken by John Krause, William S. Young and others. C00053 $21.95 + s&h

been announced that 2-8-2 No. 19 is being re- located to Elgin, Ore., for service on Wallowa Union Scenic Railway’s Eagle Cap Excursion Train. However, the Baldwin Mikado needs boiler repairs, so a 2012 return is unlikely. After a mechanical problem sidelined

Frisco 2-10-0 No. 1630 in 2011, it’s again poised for a comeback at the Illinois Railway Museum, but probably not until later in the season. In the meantime, IRM is hosting David Kloke’s replica 4-4-0 Leviathan (listed in the Traveling Locomotives section) over two weekends in May and June. The Northwest Michigan Engine & Thresher Club, which runs the Buckley Old Engine Show at Buckley, Mich., experienced mechanical problems in 2011 with its 1924 Alco 0-4-0 which has run during the annual August steam show every year since 1996. As a result, club members spent much of last summer restoring another 0-4-0 to service, former Menomonie Sugar No. 25, which was once an exhibit at the National Railroad Mu- seum in Green Bay, Wis.

ues to work on Monson 0-4-4T No. 3 and hopes to have it out in 2012 (boiler issues prevented a steam up in 2011); sister 0-4-4T No. 4 is back in service at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Portland. Both spent many years at Edaville, which recent- ly returned its British-built 0-6-0 to service after a five-year rest. Canada’s Western Development Museum

in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, has reboil- ered 0-4-0T No. 101 which returned to oper- ation after a two year absence in June 2011 and is scheduled to run on the museum grounds every weekend during the summer. Big steam returning to the high iron in

2012 includes Soo Line 2-8-2 No. 1003 and Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261, and work con- tinues in Chattanooga to return Southern 2-8-2 No. 4501 to the rails (don’t look for it this year; there’s still lots of work to do). One fan favorite that’s out of service, for the time being, is Louisville & Nashville No. 152; the 4-6-2 was pulled from duty last fall after it de- veloped leaking flues, and it’s now down for its 1472-day inspection. Looking ahead, several notable steam lo- comotives are currently under restoration including Southern Pacific 4-6-2 No. 2479 in San Jose, Calif.; Northern Pacific 4-6-0 1364 at Toppenish, Wash.; and the former Bald- win shop switcher 0-6-0 No. 26 at Steam- town NHS in Scranton, Penn. Besides No. 26, expect to see several other 0-6-0s take to the rails shortly. A pair of ex-U.S. Army 0-6- 0s are being rebuilt in New Jersey; former New Hope & Ivyland No. 9 on SMS Lines at Bridgeport and former Morris County Cen- tral No. 4039 at Whippany. Work is set to re- sume on another big 0-6-0, ex-Morehead & North Fork No. 14, at Kentucky’s Big South Fork Scenic Railway. Thanks to all who helped with informa-

tion this year. Corrections and comments are welcome at jterry618@hotmail.com.
