duced (not great quality) footage of the No- vember 2001 annual steam festival, held that year at the Maltiempo Mill where 26 lo- comotives from 15 mills came to compete. The Moron diesel shop is visited and we take an excursion aboard a Budd RDC on the main line where trains meet, orders are hooped up, cabs are ridden and more Russ- ian diesels are seen. This volume contains staged steam run-
bys at several sugar mills (Volume One is shy of traditional runbys) with the best ac- tion at the Maltiempo, Ecuador, and Rafael Freyre mills. Single headers, many double- headers and one tripleheader are shown. Lo- comotives include handsome 2-6-0s, 2-6-2s, 2-8-0s and 4-6-0s, plus the largest 2-8-2 in the country (a 1925 Alco). In addition to the very good runbys, many scenes show the slower-paced yard switching and engine ter- minal shuffling. One videographer’s materi- al is a little softer focus than the rest in this volume. Scenes include taking water, riding tenders and cabs, watching the cane cars be- ing dumped at the mills, riding cabooses and trains, some nice pan video out on the main lines and infrastructure scenes which in- clude diamonds, towers, yards, shops, and dumped locomotives. Gauges range from three-foot to 30-inch to standard gauge. Shot mostly by John Mueller, with a few

others contributing footage here and there, the coverage shows good to very good ama- teur technique. The narration is quite good as always, and the editing is quite satisfac- tory, with more of a travelogue style that gives context to everything and attempts to cover all that can be seen — not just a series of train runbys. The primary shooting style in both volumes provides a fair concentra- tion of locomotive, rail car, electric, and rolling stock running gear close-ups, which should be good for modelers. The brass bells and whistles sound quite good and when worked hard, the locomotive exhausts are convincing. There is a lot of coverage here of many subjects. Some things are done in great depth while others are less thorough, but such is travel in a communist country where access can sometimes be limited. Many Cuban engines are cosmetically challenged for traditional American tastes (dirty or gaudy), and the steam rights of way are darned near condemnable, but fans of (most- ly) narrow gauge steam from a variety of builders, some dating back to the turn of the last century, will find this coverage appeal- ing. And to keep things interesting, there are always rumors about repatriating some Cuban steam locomotives and automobiles once the country opens up. — Tom Kelcec
