The Cass Scenic Railroad could be part of a proposed 90-mile tourist railroad circle in West Virginia. The former timber railroad would be used from its namesake town to a connection with the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley at Spruce.

THE DURBIN & GREENBRIER VAL- LEY, visited by Eric Miller on page 36, is the centerpiece of an ambitious plan to form a 90- mile tourist rail route through West Vir- ginia’s rugged mountains. The plan was un- veiled in Charleston on February 13, 2012. The current operation in Durbin is isolat-

This 100 page, five chapter spiral bound book includes 153 photos of Lackawanna, Erie, and EL wreck cranes and their associated equipment. Most of these photographs are being published for the first time. The book also includes 36 drawings and equipment charts. Ron thoroughly covers the complete roster of wrecking cranes, wreck trains, and wrecking procedures of all three railroads. Ron also provides the first ever explanation of Erie's mysterious Maintenance Of Way numbering system.

ed from the rest of the railroad world, and one phase of completing the circle would be to connect the D&GV operation from Elkins by relaying track from a connection at Bemis to Durbin. The current line south of Durbin would be extended south to Cass, restoring a line washed out in 1985. Existing track over the Cass Scenic to Spruce would connect back to the D&GV, completing the loop.

The two missing sections of track (Bemis-

Durbin and Durbin-Cass) would be restored using rail lifted from the former Western Maryland south of the “Big Cut” below Spruce on the West Virginia Central. This would be turned into a 30-mile hiking/biking trail along the Elk River, and hikers/bikers would have access to the Greenbrier Trail (former Chesapeake & Ohio south of Cass) by using the Cass Scenic to get to Cass. The final result would be a 90-mile loop,

with train operations based in eight cities and towns along the way. All this would be in addition to the fine railroad museum that’s taking shape in Elkins. There’s a lot happening in West Virginia. — S.B.
