BSRIA Publishes new Illustrated Guide to Mechanical Building Services (BG 31/2012)
T
his publication is an update to one of our best- selling guides, AG 15/2002 and will be available from 23rd April. As with the previous edition, it provides basic reference information on mechanical building services systems for construction clients and professionals in other areas of the construction industry. This guide covers the key areas of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and controls and in the new edition, information has been added on: • pumps • pressurisation • low-carbon heat sources • MVHR systems • commissioning, handover and project evaluation. For construction clients, the guide provides a simple insight into the main system options discussed during the briefing process. It can also help clients to identify and raise technical questions which they feel are relevant to their organisation's specific needs. For construction professionals, the guide provides a quick reference to building services systems and can assist their working knowledge of the subject. For those new to the industry and non-experts, this guide provides a valuable introduction to the basics of building services systems. To ensure the guide is simple and quick to use, a brief overview of each system is provided, followed by a list of key points. Photographs and simple drawings are used to
help explain the appearance and operation of each system.
It is acknowledged that the design
team’s role includes assessing and recommending appropriate design solutions for a given project. This guide does not aim to provide a route for system selection other than to point out typical applications for many of the systems covered.
The Illustrated Guide to Mechanical Building Services can be purchased alone or with other Illustrated Guides and is also available as a licenced version in Microsoft Word format. A new edition of its companion
guide Illustrated Guide to Electrical Building Services is due to be published later this year. This will provide the latest information on electrical systems including power supply and distribution, fire detection and alarm systems, security systems, lighting systems, uninterruptible power supplies and structured cabling.
The book will be priced at £50 to non-members and £25 to BSRIA members. Tel: +44 (0)1344 465529 Email:

You could be forgiven for missing this jewel of a book. The title ‘Sustainable Materials’ will not excite everyone but the content of this visionary book should. It takes the reader a step back: to thinking about the use of materials in a holistic way “...with both eyes open”. Easy to read, it has lots of good colourful illustrations,

fascinating asides, new ways of thinking about things and numerous case studies. Starting with ‘The World of Materials’, it moves onto ‘With One Eye Open’, then ‘Both Eyes Open’, discusses the use of cement, plastics and paper, and finishes with the finale ‘Creating A Sustainable Materials Future’. In the real world, when thinking about sustainability we are always trying to work out the best of compromises: resources, materials, financial and environment
costs...and consequences, etc. This book reminds us of some the tools we could use and suggests new tools and ideas along the way. Well written with light bulb moments throughout the book. It is an excellent book for students and the experienced professional alike. Review by: Dr David Hickie, Director, Institution of

MONODRAUGHT CPD PRESENTATIONS ACCREDITED BY RIBA Leading zero- and low-energy ventilation specialist
Monodraught has announced that its CPD modules have been accredited by RIBA. Details of online information and seminars are now available via the RIBA CPD Providers Network. The accredited CPD
materials are hosted online at the RIBA website and available for download to registered architects as two online learning options – Low Energy Building Design PART 2 and Low Energy Building Design PART 1. A CPD seminar presentation, Low Energy Building Design – A Natural Approach to Energy Saving, is
also available for groups, either via the RIBA website or arranged directly with Monodraught. The in-depth presentation explores the various
approaches available to apply natural technologies within the built environment. It also demonstrates how easy it is to specify products that work in harmony with a building’s aesthetics to increase its natural performance, whilst minimising energy consumption.
Within its CPD portfolio Monodraught also offers specific modules on natural ventilation, natural daylighting and Cool-Phase. All the CPD modules are also available to CIBSE members via the institute’s website. Email:
