AFS launched a new Sustainability Ad-hoc


Committee in January. T e committee is devoted to clearly defi ning sustain-


ability for metalcasters and engaging facilities in sustainable practices. T e committee defi nes sustainability as the capac- ity to endure with the long-term maintenance of environ- mental, economic and social responsibility. On March 29, the committee hosted a webinar, “Lauch-


ing Sustainability,” and presented “Sustainability Pays” at the 116th


Metalcasting Congress in Columbus in April. T e committee currently has seven core members and is

AFS Holds First Annual Metalcasting Safety Week


AFS successfully hosted its fi rst


Metalcasting Safety Week May 4-11. During the week, AFS off ered three


webinars relating to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. T e fi rst, “OSHA’s Revisions to the Hazard Communication Standard,” discussed the newly fi nalized revi- sions to the standard and how it diff ers from Global Harmonization. “OSHA Recordkeeping: Doing it Right” was hosted by former OSHA head Edwin Foulke. T e fi nal we- binar, “OSHA Hot Topics,” discussed the agency’s priorities and the status of rules such as the Crystalline Silica Rule. AFS also off ered a variety of its safety publications at a discounted rate during the week. “For its fi rst time around, Metalcasting Safety Week was a successful event,” said Alfred Spada, AFS director of mar- keting. “We look forward to making it bigger and better in the future.”

Survey of Wages and Economic Benefi ts Available


AFS’s 2012 Survey of Wages and Economic Benefi ts is


now available. T e survey details the current status of wages and benefi ts in the metalcasting labor markets of the U.S. and Canada. “T is survey is a great tool that allows metalcasters to

compare their wages and economic benefi ts with other metalcasting facilities in the area and nation,” said Jerry Call, AFS executive vice president. “T is year, the survey represents 111 metalcasting facilities in the U.S. and 10 metalcasters in Canada.”
