Tunisian yard bounces back

Political developments in the country created short-term difficulties last year, but CMR Tunisia Ship Repairs has retained a loyal customer base and is back handling a wide range of vessel types.

Tunisia returned to normal fairly quickly. Inevitably, though, the events had an impact on the country’s leading shiprepair facility, CMR Tunisia Ship Repairs. But, despite the fact that many bookings for February and March especially were cancelled by ship owners, the shipyard never stopped its activities and over subsequent months managed to win back these customers. Last year the yard reports it achieved

A

particular success in repairs to ferries, ro-ro ships and offshore supply boats. Te yard also saw an increase in demand for the application of silicone coatings, a technically difficult operation. One particular customer has now sent the yard several ships for complete grit blasting and the application of silicone coatings. CMR points out that, as the time between the application of the last anti-corrosive coat and first coat of silicone has to be less than a day, a reorganisation of working practices was required, involving the deployment of two teams with twice as much equipment as usual. Ferries and ro-ro ships are a mainstay for

the yard and in early 2012 CMR was engaged in a demanding drydocking involving a ro-ro ship, with work required in several different parts of the ship. The scope of work included mechanical overhauls to the thrusters and main engine, the application of silicone coatings to the underwater hull and repairs to the propeller shaſt, all within a tight time scale. CMR Tunisia Ship Repairs believes its

location will make it increasingly attractive to ship operators in the Mediterranean, through a combination of quality and ‘interesting’ prices. As a result it continues to invest to enhance its facilities to support new business. Recently the yard has acquired two

ABB static frequency converters, rated at 150KVA each, to allow ships in drydocks to be supplied with electricity at 440V/60Hz
