Great Lakes picks up Canada ferry contract

Te Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has awarded a contract for the 5-year drydocking of Pelee Islander to Great Lakes Shipyard.

P

elee Islander arrived at Great Lakes Shipyard in early April and will be hauled-out using the yard’s

new 700tonnes capacity Marine Traveliſt. The work carried out will include hull inspection and painting; propeller, shaſt, and rudder inspection; steel work; and other routine maintenance. Pelee Islander is a passenger ferry operated by Owen Sound Transportation Company and is the second Canadian-flag vessel repair project at Great Lakes Shipyard in recent months. In another important development

for the Great Lakes Shipyard, working in partnership with Rolls-Royce the company has

secured a contract to

upgrade Interlake’s tug Dorothy Ann. Te upgrade will convert Dorothy Ann’s Rolls-Royce/Ulstein azimuth thrusters from fixed-pitch to controllable-pitch

propellers. Te project will include the replacement of the lower drive units, as well as all thruster control systems on

the vessel, and is intended to improve the reliability of the propulsion system and reduce overall maintenance costs. SRCT

As well as remobilising the vessel, the yard carried out the required class survey, blasted and painted the vessel with new colour scheme and undertook various steel renewals. SRCT
