in Qatar. Harris Pye already has offices in the Middle East in Sharjah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Oman and Saudi Arabia, and it will now establish a prominent presence in Qatar through the link with Sora. Sora and Harris Pye will work together to secure
and carry out a range of marine contracts in the region, from boiler plant servicing through to vessel conversion works. Sora is well connected locally and has been involved in the development of Qatar’s LNG fleet as well as the building of the Nakilat-Keppel Offshore Marine (NKOM) dockyard.

Braemar Braemar, which
incorporates The Salvage
Association, has announced the dates for its 2012 Port and Shipyard Familiarisation Courses, which will be held in Falmouth, UK, and Piraeus, Greece. Each intensive course has been developed to introduce marine insurance professionals to the basic technical aspects of shipyard repair, the damage encountered in marine losses and marine surveying, investigating and reporting techniques. During each course a group of delegates from the
marine insurance market will be accompanied by a senior marine surveyor from Braemar who will act as mentor. This year’s courses will take place on the following dates: Falmouth Port & Shipyard Familiarisation Course - May 22nd-25th, June 19th-22nd and October 2nd-5th; Piraeus Port & Shipyard Familiarisation course - May 15th-17th and June 12th-15th.
In addition to the core
programme, the Falmouth course will offer the opportunity to visit local repair and refit facilities, while delegates attending the Piraeus course will be given the option of visiting the Neorion shipyard at Syros Island.

Investment PIL invests in China repair
yard Singapore’s Pacific International Lines (PIL) has taken an 18% interest in a new shiprepair and recycling venture in Changxing Island, Dalian. PIL’s long-time shipbuilding partner, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, is taking a 67% stake, while steelmill Anshan Iron & Steel is taking the remaining 15%. Most of the investment will be used to support Dalian
Shipbuilding Industry Marine Services (DSIMS), which will provide 500,000m² of space for ship repairs and offshore conversion. In April a bulk carrier will be the first ship for repair at the yard, which will be fully operational by the end of the year. Te company is also investing in Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Ship Recycling yard, a green ship recycling facility.
Technical agreement N-KOM signs with GTT
Qatar’s Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) shipyard has signed a technical agreement with French engineering company Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT). Te agreement will allow N-KOM to enhance the range of services it offers and provide membrane tank servicing for liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers repaired in the shipyard. Taking advantage of its strategic location close to LNG terminals in Ras Laffan Industrial City, N-KOM has completed over 20 repairs for LNG carriers alone since starting operations in November 2010. GTT is the world’s leading company in LNG containment system technology, with its technologies equipping almost 70% of the world fleet. In particular, all of Nakilat’s own Q-Max and Q-Flex vessels are equipped with GTT containment systems. LNG carrier repairs are proving to be a mainstay of
the workload being handled by N-KOM. During 2011 the yard undertook 43 shiprepair projects overall, of which 19 were LNG carriers. Te remainder were primarily offshore support vessels, container ships and tankers. Tis seems set to be another busy year for LNG
work at N-KOM. Projects completed in the first three months of the year include work to the Nakilat Q-Max tanker, Mazah, and Al Jassasitya for Maran Gas Maritime. Upcoming projects include a series of four Japanese-owned LNG carriers. Al Bidda and Al Aajbah, operated by MOL LNG, and NYK’s Al Jasra are due to be drydocked and repaired over the summer, while Al Raayan will be the first K Line LNG carrier to be drydocked at N-KOM since the yard’s inauguration in November 2010.
