Feature 5 | ELECTRICAL AND NAVIGATION SYSTEM REPAIRS & REFITS
These include the recent launch of a new BNWAS basic unit type-approved by major international classification societies such as ABS, GL, Class NK and Registro Italiano Navale (RINa) and meeting the latest IEC 62616 performance standard. According to SAM, the system provides a particularly cost-effective alarm and monitoring solution suitable for all types of vessel and is designed for simple onboard installation by crew. Key features of BNWAS Basic include a main alarm panel with dimming, ship accommodation alarm panels, an assist call facility, motions sensors, reset push buttons, activation switch, reset timer inputs from radar, and activation via steering gear and/or Trackpilot supported by flexible interfaces. ECDIS Basic system is an ‘out-of-the-box’
product designed for simple installation and configuration by crew personnel. Standardised interface ports permit rapid
installation and a dedicated set-up screen for entering ship-specific parameters. SAM points out that ECDIS Basic can be installed as either a single or dual ECDIS, with the dual version reducing requirements for paper charts.
retrofit
SAM Electronics maintains a dedicated department
at its Hamburg
headquarters, specialising in the worldwide installation of navigation and communications assemblies. Its tasks comprise planning, organising and handling all retrofits involving the company, its subsidiaries and service partners. An example of this global activity is recent work carried out by the company’s Chinese subsidiary, SAM Taihang Electronics, which has already successfully completed retrofits of the integrated bridge systems aboard 15 COSCO container ships. A further four similar COSCO refits are to be carried out this year.
SAM also maintains a global network
of subsidiaries and contracted service partners, with service worldwide planned and organised by a dedicated call and coordination centre in Hamburg. Meanwhile, company subsidiaries maintain other European service centres in Denmark, Italy, Te Netherlands, Norway and the UK, while in Asia there are centres in China, Singapore and South Korea. With the appearance of new satellites
and roaming services providing higher data bandwidth at lower cost, new possibilities for the development of remote maintenance are being explored by SAM Electronics. Already, for instance, NACOS Platinum meets this trend with the provision of remote maintenance facilities supported wherever necessary by SAM Electronics’ ranges of satellite and other comparable communications systems. LNG vibration analysis deal for Nico
Dubai-based Nico International is to retrofit some sophisticated electronic monitoring systems on a fleet of LNG carriers.
P
art of Topaz International’s Ship Repair division, Nico International’s Automation & Instrumentation
business has recently won a three year service contract with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNATCO), National Gas Shipping Company Ltd (NGSCO) to carry out vibration monitoring and data analysis on the Abu-Dhabi based owner’s eight LNG vessels. For past few years Nico international has
been providing vibration analysis services for rotating machines, for both marine and industrial applications, using a conventional analyser
type Entek IRD. Responding
to market trends and emerging business opportunities, Nico has now upgraded its vibration monitoring and data analysis equipment with the ‘state of the art’ Vibxpert Ex Version. Additionally Nico has also acquired a separate octave band sound analyser to measure and determine noise levels. Paul Blake, Ship Repair manager, says: “Te main benefit of Vibxpert is that it assists vibration measurement and data collection from identified measuring points on rotating machineries and supports soſtware generated trend and deviation reports.”
44 Retrofit work is buoyant for Nico International’s Automation & Instrumentation business. Te Automation and Instrumentation
division has also upgraded its range of services by becoming a Germanischer Lloyd approved simplified voyage data recorder (SVDR) service supplier. As a result it is able to conduct annual performance tests on Totem SVDR systems. Bridge navigational watch alarm
system (BNWAS) retrofits represent a growing area of business for Nico and
the Dubai-based company frequently attends vessels to install, repair and service BNWAS. Recently Nico secured a particularly notable contract to deliver, install and commission a total of 20 Uni-Safe BNWAS onboard various vessels for GAC Turkmenistan. Nico International is an authorised sales and services agent for two BNWAS suppliers, Alphatron Marine and Uni-Safe. SRCT
