More ferry work comes to Astander
Spanish shipyard Astilleros de Santander (Astander) has seen an increase in the number of ferries and ro-ro vessels it has repaired in recent months.
A
stander, which has a particular reputation for repairing chemical/ product tankers and offshore vessels,
has seen an improvement in demand from the ferry/ro-ro market recently, even though the location of the yard is not in a particularly busy trading area for this type of vessel. According to Ignacio Chamizo, Astander
sales and commercial manager: “We have a capability to develop complex projects in short delivery times, and very high level of technical and safety skills. Tis has helped provide the yard with a large number of vessels which have been docked during 2011 and the first part of 2012.” One notable visitor in the first quarter
of 2012 was the Brittany Ferries ro-pax, Cap Finistere, which docked in February at Astander. Tis project was the first dry docking contract awarded by Brittany Ferries to the Spanish yard. Te 32,728grt ferry underwent underwater
high pressure cleaning and a complete Jotun Sealion Repulse silicone coating system was applied. Additional mechanical, piping and minor steel and accommodation repairs were carried out simultaneously. Also completed in the first part of 2012 was
work to the 15,229grt ro-pax Daniya, which was purchased by the Spanish company Balearia and brought to Astander for a major upgrade. This included the manufacture

and installation of a new aft ramp, the overhaul of both tailshaſts and a total of eight CPP propeller blade repairs. In addition, Astander installed a new air conditioning system, completely overhauled the main engine and gearbox and carried out other accommodation works and general repairs. These two significant
ferry projects
followed on from a highly successful year in 2011 as far as this type of work is concerned.
Vegaland was docked for a Swedish owner for drydocking and general repairs, as well as propeller blade repairs and steel renewals in the ballast tanks. French owner Louis Dreyfus docked Ville de Bordeaux for general repairs and hull painting and CMN contracted Astander to drydock Pelican for general repairs. Te project also required the recoating of the vessel’s decks and aſt ramps, bow thruster and boiler repairs, steel work in the tanks, a main engine overhaul, work to the hydraulic cylinders and modification of the vessel’s aft ramp actuator systems. Astander also worked on two car carriers, Auto Baltic and Gran Canaria, for Bore Line and Suardiaz respectively in 2011. Last year Astander also handled the Volcan
de Teide, a newbuilding from the Barreras yard for the Spanish owner Naviera Armas. Te vessel was awarded to Astander for a pre-delivery drydocking which included a full blasting and silicone-based recoating of the entire hull, as well as all of the superstructure and funnels. SRCT
