USA’s decision to part company with Fairtrade in Europe, Mr Züblin said he was all in favour of extending the Fair Trade model to organisations other than just co- ops. "I think it is very important to open the market to smallholders and to larger farms," he told C&CI. Although Migros has decided to opt for
UTZ Certified for most of the coffee its sells, Mr Züblin said he sees merits in most types of certification schemes, so long as they help farmers. Asked whether there was a need for greater harmonisa- tion between the various certification labels and whether there might already be too many, Mr Züblin said he was very much of the opinion that famers would only benefit from harmonisation.
Benchmarking against best practice
"We have held discussions with the various organisations involved about harmonisation. Some were more receptive than others. UTZ Certified is going through the process of benchmarking itself against defined best

practice as exemplified in concepts such as the Global Social Compliance Programme, and we think that it would be helpful if all of the certification schemes did so. "We aren’t trying to say ‘this one is the
best,’ or that one is better than the others for farmers, or for consumers, but we think it is very important that farmers have combined audits in future. We also think that there only benefits to be gained from benchmarking the different schemes against industry best practice. "There is no reason why we should not
be able to work quite quickly to a situation where, when an audit team goes onto a farm, that 95 per cent of the questions they ask are common to the requirements of all of the certification schemes." C&CI
Mr Züblin believes farmers would benefit greatly from harmonised certification and verification
