Also on the conference’s agenda will be the role of women in the cocoa sector

and what should be done to attract a new generation to cocoa farming

in the Ivorien cocoa sector and the chal- lenge of matching sustainable growth in supply with that of certified sustainably- produced cocoa. In examining how cocoa production

practices can be changed to ensure such growth in certified cocoa supplies, speakers will look at how the private sector can do more to help farmers and how the latter can gain better access to finance. Improving productivity to deliver both higher yields and better quality will be another topic, along with how farm- ers’ professionalism can be boosted. Trends in cocoa supply and in

demand both generally and for specific confectionery products and what the chocolate industry precisely wants from cocoa producers will be covered in other discussions, as will how to maximise the growth potential in emerging markets, such as China and India, and origin countries. This is something that Mr Anga believes is very important if pro- duction begins to boom, as he fears it may, because of a lack of coordinated policies.

Improving efficiency

Improving the efficiency of the cocoa market is another topic that will be addressed at the conference. Speakers will examine ways of improving the avail- ability of better market information and making pricing more transparent, and how to help farmers manage risk, using hedging, insurance and other tools. Also on the conference’s agenda will be the role of women in the cocoa sector and what should be done to attract a new generation to cocoa farming.

Cocoa production practices will be high on the agenda at the November conference

If all goes according to plan, the con-

ference will end with the adoption of a "global agenda for a sustainable world cocoa economy" and agreement on a 10-year strategic action plan for the sec- tor. It is certainly a tall order.  C&CI
