available from Convex Compostable labels are now available from Convex Plastics for its Econic and other bio-degradable pack- aging. The new compostable labels are suitable for plain packs and can be custom-printed to maximise branding and shelf appeal. Developed in partnership with EcoSavi Group in
New Zealand the compostable labels are an adaptation of Convex’s award-winning GreenSACK technology, which easily breaks down when composted into CO2
,
water and biomass. They also incorporate a unique, specifically designed water-based adhesive, free of the numerous chemicals used in traditional adhesives. This enables the labels to break down in just two and a half months after composting. Convex is also in the process of developing recycla-
ble backings for the EcoSavi labels. These are expect- ed to be commercially available within the next six months. Econic was developed to provide the ideal sealing and barrier properties for coffee and other dry goods. Convex is also planning to launch Econic in more sizes and trials are currently underway to devel- op Econic form, fill seal film for companies wanting to machine fill their bags.
and to lower the product’s carbon footprint," said Innovia Films’ Market Developer Neil Banerjee. "NatureFlex films offer a viable
alternative to coffee producers who want a complete packaging structure that is lightweight and able to not only protect their prod- uct but at the same time is com- postable and made from renew- able resources. "This is the real point of differ-
entiation for NatureFlex," he said, "as existing laminate structures for lightweight coffee packaging can be difficult to dispose of except through landfill, whereas NatureFlex can be composted." As Innovia Films noted, most
flexible packaging for the roast and ground coffee and coffee bean market typically consists of a laminate structure made up of three layers. NatureFlex films can be combined with other biopoly- mers by a converter, to produce a renewable alternative to the above structure.

The films comply with stan-
dards for compostable packaging, including EN13432, AS4736 and ASTM D6400. Depending on the individual films selected, the fin- ished laminate structure could be certified compostable to the same standards subject to appropriate ink, print design and adhesive choices. If required, the pouches can be vented or a fully com- postable zip closure could be added. C&CI
