MIDEAST
The USA Triathlon Mideast Region supports organizations that demonstrate dedication to multisport and inspiration to special-interest athlete groups. Dare2tri paratriathlon club in Chicago, Ill., is one such organization. In one year the club grew from an idea to being one of the first official USA Triathlon paratriathlon clubs in the country. The club motto is “One Inspires Many,” and the club has 85 athletes and over 150 volunteers.

This club is changing the lives of those with physical disabilities and visual impairments. Club member Hailey Danisewicz, 21, describes the impact of triathlon on her life. She is a cancer survivor and an above-the-knee amputee.

“A year ago I never would have imagined that I would be doing triathlons at all, much less competitively. I hadn’t really gotten involved in the disabled sports world since losing my leg above the knee six years ago to cancer. With the help of Dave Rotter of Scheck & Siress prosthetics, Melissa Stockwell, world champion paratriathlete, and Keri Schindler, cofounder of Dare2tri, I was ready to conquer my first triathlon. I had two goals: to not finish last and to finish the race within 2.5 hours. I crushed both goals. The sense of accomplishment was unlike anything I had ever felt, and in that instance, I knew that this was a feeling that I wanted to experience again and again. I love that through triathlon, I have found a piece of myself that cancer had taken away — my identity as an athlete.”

Schindler, a member of the USA Triathlon Mideast Regional Council, is spearheading initiatives that will grow grassroots programming such as Dare2Tri. The region supports her efforts as she paves the way to field the best and most prepared team when paratriathlon makes its debut at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.
