Her Turn
Women’s Committee Continues to Pick up Momentum
ore than ever before, women are jumping into the sport and lifestyle of triathlon. Balancing the training for three disciplines is a fun challenge, met with discipline and integrity that the sport requires. As the sport grows, women are also jumping into leadership roles as race directors, committee members, regional council members and beyond. These women are paving the way for future generations to become involved on the business and governance side of the sport.

The USA Triathlon Women’s Committee (WC) is here to empower women in the sport to positions of governance and provide resources for women for better performance in the sport.

WHAT THE WC HAS DONE
The committee was revitalized and gained momentum in 2010 thanks to the work of chair Awilda Harrington. In the past two years, she has populated the committee with women who bring diverse business experience, as well as personal athletic experience in triathlons.

A primary step was to create a vision statement and a plan of action. The committee focused on encouraging women to consider and prepare for positions in management and governance and sought to better train female participants to be the best athletes and leaders they can be. That has come to fruition in a couple ways.

Webinars: The committee hosted a webinar series with the goal of recruiting, educating and promoting women for key leadership positions within USA Triathlon at the local, regional and national levels of governance. The free webinars are available on usatriathlon.org.

Grants: Three matching reimbursable grants were awarded to recipients within the Regional Councils and to sanctioned clubs that wanted to create women-specific clinics and educational opportunities.

Her Turn: The official committee column has appeared in USA Triathlon Magazine. The articles addressed the needs of women athletes at various stages in their lives, and interviewed leaders in the sport.

WHERE THE WOMEN’S COMMITTEE IS HEADED
“The USA Triathlon Women’s Committee is building on the foundation and success established in the past two years,” said Harrington. “We encourage you to get involved. Join us at our seminar on April 30 in St. Petersburg, Fla., or visit our Facebook page — www.facebook.com/USATWC.”

Seminar: The Women’s Committee will host a seminar on April 30 in conjunction with the St. Anthony’s Triathlon. The speakers will be a dynamic group of successful businesswomen and well-known athletes who have transitioned from the sport to successful careers. They will present information and their own experience that will encourage, teach and promote leadership and a desire to participate and seek positions of governance within USAT. Visit http://bit.ly/WCseminar to learn more.

Webinars: The committee will build on the success obtained through the webinar series by providing another three-part webinar series with the goal of educating and promoting women for key leadership positions within USAT.

Grants: The first set of grants provided such successful events that three matching-reimbursable grants will be awarded again to clubs and associations within USAT. The grants will be rewarded to groups who plan to use it to hold women’s clinics for beginners, women who are returning to the sport at different stages of their lives, women who want to attend a clinic with their children, and clinics that will focus on the intersection of universities and colleges and promoting women in triathlons, or conferences with sessions that include leadership and governance.

The Women’s Committee is continuing to focus its resources on encouraging women to consider and prepare for positions of leadership and to better train females to be the best athletes they can be. As a young committee, the goal is to feed the pipeline and be ready with qualified women candidates for positions of governance. The current climate in the world of triathlon is focused on the role women play in the sport both as leaders and athletes. USAT is committed to serve its female members in a way that meets their needs and provides for development in the sport, and the Women’s Committee is a conduit to help make that happen.

Her Turn is presented by the USA Triathlon Women’s Committee and is intended to address topics affecting female participants in the sport. Email awildalc@gcandmservices.com to learn more about the committee.
