AT THE RACES
Noah (9) and Sofia (8) Sadir at the HITS Triathlon in Naples, Fla., on Jan. 7. Noah has done triathlons for two years, and this race was Sofia’s first. After watching the highlights of the Ironman World Championships last year, both hope to compete in Kona in 2022.

Jimmy Elmore (13) completed his first triathlon in Hightstown, N.J., on Sept. 24, 2011, and finished third in his division. Jimmy has High Functioning Autism and is quite an inspiration to his classmates who would like to give triathlon a try as well.

Max Moldenhauer (7) competed in his first triathlon — the Nottingham Kids Triathlon in Maryland — after learning to swim just a few weeks prior. The event consisted of a 25-yard swim, 2-mile bike and a .5-mile run. Max also plays year-round soccer and lacrosse.

Torun Grace (5) loves triathlon and in 2011 she participated in the St. Croix Kids Triathlon in Wisconsin. This season she is hoping to race without her training wheels and to fit into her race belt, so she doesn’t have to wear it like a halter top.

? THE BIG QUESTION
Which part of triathlon do you like the best?

“I like the bike because on the bike you think, ‘just one more event, the run and then you are at the finish line and you are done!’ The bike is fun and you can pass people and you can see the scenery of the race.”
— Savannah van Vuren, 9, Hoffman Estates, Ill.

“My favorite part of triathlon is the finish because the feeling of relief washes over you. You feel proud and healthy to have accomplished something this big! I can’t wait to do another tri.”
— Zoey Birman, 9, Herndon, Va.
