PACIFIC NORTHWEST
The Northwest Collegiate Triathlon Conference (NWCTC) has been a bit of a ghost town in years past. However the momentum is building to make that all change. This year the Best in the West Triathlon Festival will hold the NWCTC Championships Sept. 8-9 at Foster Lake in Sweet Home, Ore. Free camping will be offered to all student athletes and there will be collegiate specific waves during the event. The effort of student leaders and race directors throughout the area is gaining momentum in hopes to have a full race schedule for the NWCTC in the near future. Currently there are only three USAT registered collegiate teams — OSU, WU and S. Idaho. Oregon State will be traveling to nationals this year and has been the only full team to compete in the past three national championships. Grant money to assist collegiate teams to nationals is available through the PNW Council. Contact PNW collegiate coordinator Blair Bronson at bronsonblair@gmail.com

PNW regional rankings have been a hit on Facebook the past couple of months and we plan to continue this program in 2012. Awards will be given to the top three age group winners. Rankings are based on individual results from participation in at least three sanctioned races. Scoring is based on the formula developed by USA Triathlon and can be found at www.usatriathlon.org/rankings. If your favorite triathlon is not sanctioned, write to the race director and ask them to sanction with USAT. A sanctioned race promotes a fair race, a safe race and the ability to participate in regional and national rankings. Rankings are one of the many benefits of being a USAT annual member. Avoid one-day race fees and sign up now at usatriathlon.org.

ROCKYMOUNTAIN
The Rocky Mountain Regional Council has recently experienced a few changes. Congratulations to Chris Bowerbank of Utah. After many years as the council’s race director representative, Chris will be replacing Alan Ley as the Council chair. Alan, as always, will continue to be an advocate for multisport in the region. Thanks Alan for your many years of service to USA Triathlon and the Rocky Mountain Region.

Your regional council is continually seeking individuals who wish to be an active participant in the growth and promotion of our sport and lifestyle in the Rocky Mountain Region. To contact the council member in your area and keep up with all that’s happing in the region visit www.usatrmr.com as well as our Facebook page.

2012 just might be the perfect year to experience all the diversity our region has to offer. From Wyoming to El Paso, Texas, the number and variety of events to choose from has never been greater. For those of you looking to compete against the best our region has to offer, there will be several Regional Championship events. The Greeley Triathlon will once again host the Regional Junior and U23 Championship race. There will also be a separate 13-15-year-old race, which will consist of a 250-meter swim, 6-mile bike and a 1.5-mile run. Look for a Regional Club Championship and a Collegiate Championship race as well at the beautiful Ogden Valley Triathlon in September.

Athletes come from around the world to train and compete in the Rocky Mountain Region. As travel costs continue to rise, maybe it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with our own back yard and load up our race schedules with a Rocky Mountain 2012.
