MODERN CASTING
LINKEDIN DISCUSSION
On the Foundry and Diecaster Network on LinkedIn, a member asked, “Any suggestions on an effi cient way to clean casting molds? We have a mix of hotbox and coldbox tooling to maintain regularly.” Below are excerpts of some of the discussion points:
“High pressure water works well for coldbox tooling. Baking soda applied through a sand blast rig works for hot- box tooling.”—Dale Deem, engineer
“Try cold jet dry ice blasting.” —Gordon Peters, Exide Technologies
the way to go.”—James Jazwinski , Metcast Service Tech Resources
“I agree with Gordon, CO2
“Crushed walnut shells, when used as a soft abrasive blast media, can create an extremely durable, angular, multifaceted grit.”—Cliff Willea, Michigan Steel
“It never ceases to amaze me how many innovative ideas are out there on big and small issues in a foundry!”—Sean Tan, Telford Holdings

When Olson Aluminum Cast- ings was looking to expand, it sent out a team to visit metalcasting facilities using the equipment and technologies it was considering installing in its facility in Rockford, Ill. The ability to see the equip- ment in a production environment helped Olson Aluminum’s staff visualize how to set up their own new molding operation. Sometimes it’s tough to let oth- ers in to sniff around your opera- tion—there’s uneasiness in shar- ing solutions you feel give you an advantage over your competitors. But sharing is needed to advance the industry and put everyone in a better position to make money. One related story has stuck with me over the past several years. With less than a year as foundry manager under his belt, Kevin Leffew was tasked with research- ing and facilitating the installation of a complete new stainless steel nobake line at Urschel Laborato- ries’ captive facility. He grabbed the Casting Source Directory and started cold calling metalcasters to ask for advice. Lucky for him, the advice came pouring in. The indus- try is full of knowledgeable individuals who under- stand sharing solutions and ideas doesn’t
make their company weaker, but it does make the industry stronger. —Shannon Wetzel, Senior Editor
