Harry Moser Reminds Buyers to Consider Total Cost of Ownership Harry Moser, founder and president

of advocacy group the Reshoring Initiative, participated in President Obama’s White House Insourcing Forum in January and testified in a congressional hearing on reshoring and manufacturing in March. “Troughout the [Insourcing

Forum], a common theme emerged,” Moser said. “Many American com- panies make sourcing decisions based on price and ignore the total cost of sourcing offshore.” With four decades in the manufactur- ing industry under his belt, Moser be- lieves an examination of a business’s total costs may bring to light the benefit of reshoring components like metal castings. Te Reshoring Initiative’s goal “is to

the group’s mission statement. Moser’s new initiative encourages

industry leaders to consider every aspect of a purchase before deciding an offshore supplier is the way to go. Trough the total cost of ownership

calculator available on the Reshoring Initiative website, business owners can make educated purchasing decisions that are based on more than the cost of a component. “Instances where offshoring may

bring good, well-paying manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. by assisting com- panies to more accurately assess their total cost of offshor- ing, and shift collective thinking from ‘offshoring is cheaper’ to ‘local reduces the total cost of ownership,” according to
