without castings IN A WORLD
Would the Printing Press Have Sparked the Age of Enlightenment?
Around 1440, Holy Roman Empire Johannes Gutenberg invents the print-
ing press. He uses hand molds to cast the moveable type used in the invention. Gutenberg makes his cast letters from an alloy of lead, tin and antimony, a combina- tion still used today. T e cast letters can be used over and over in the printing process. Gutenberg prints his 42-line Bible (shown at left), which revolutionizes the printing world due to its high quality and low price. Use of the press spreads widely and contrib- utes to the Printing Revolution, allowing ideas to be circulated around the world and sparking the Scientifi c Revolution and Age of Enlightenment. Close to 600 years after his death, Gutenberg’s press is chosen as the most important invention of the millen- nium by Time-Life.
