ing national REDD+ strategy and its Low Carbon Development plans. REDD stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and aims to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forested lands and invest in low-carbon paths to sus- tainable development. REDD+ goes beyond deforestation and forest degra- dation, and includes the role of conser- vation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest car- bon stocks. It is predicted that financial flows for greenhouse gas emission reductions from REDD+ could reach up to US$30 billion a year. This significant North-South flow of funds could reward a meaningful reduction of carbon emis- sions and could also support new, pro- poor development, help conserve biodi- versity and secure vital ecosystem serv- ices. The cocoa programme was launched in the Juabeso/Bia district, an area that borders a national park and a forest reserve. Cocoa completely domi- nates the landscape in this region and

illegal encroachment into forest areas is still observed.

"Collaboration with Olam offers an ideal opportunity to stop the deforestation of this sensitive area, so that we can protect biodiversity in standing forests while at the same time planting 100 hectares of native tree species for carbon sequestration in the fight against climate change," Ms Whelan explained.

Logistic support

The programme will start with training and logistical support for 2,000 farmers in 13 communities and will increase throughout the project. The focus will be on improv- ing and increasing production through sustainable farming practices - specifically teaching farmers how the carbon stocks of cocoa, shade trees and soil can be improved by developing specific farming practices. These will enable communities to adapt to the changing climate whilst at the same time mitigate the potential adverse changes.

The mid-term goal of the programme is to ensure that the climate-friendly farm

level practices are escalated and repli- cated to a landscape and forest man- agement level. "Rainforest Alliance has focussed on deforestation from the beginning, and in the last 2-3 years our focus has increasingly been on tackling global warming, protecting standing forests and the role that farmers can play in this," Ms Whelan concluded. "At the same time, I think that all serious buyers now recognise the need to have a sus- tainable supply chain, and just as we are working with farmers on climate change, so we are also providing buyers with strategies to help them achieve sustain- ability." ■ C&CI
