Unilever makes Barry Callebaut a strategic partner


WEST AFRICA Agreement close in Côte d’Ivoire


Reuters reports that leading export companies and the authorities in Côte d’Ivoire are close to solving a dispute that had been threatening to derail reform of the cocoa sector.


Several exporters have boycotted cocoa auctions recently, arguing that the reform in its current form, which aims to guarantee farmers a price floor, is unclear and unworkable.


"It’s no longer a stalemate. There are a few points... but we’ll find a solution," said the head of a European export company.

A study has indicated that eating cocoa could help to prevent intestinal complaints linked to oxidative stress, including the onset of colon cancer.


Barry Callebaut has signed a long-term global partnership agreement under which it will become Unilever’s strategic global supplier and innovation partner of choice for its cocoa and chocolate needs.


The agreement builds on the existing long- standing working relationship and will nearly double Barry Callebaut’s current volumes with Unilever. Ultimately, Barry Callebaut will pro- vide 70 per cent of Unilever’s global cocoa and chocolate products. This will be achieved under a wide-ranging joint business develop- ment plan involving close co-operation across the areas of innovation, sustainable sourcing, capacity expansion and value improvement. As a result of the agreement, Barry Callebaut will invest approximately CHF22 mil- lion (€18 million/US$24 million) in its world- wide factory network in order to prepare the capacity required to fulfill the long-term part- nership agreement. The additional volumes have a ramp-up period of 12 months, starting immediately.

CV, one of the largest food companies in Latin America, have signed a long-term supply agreement for Bimbo’s operations in Mexico. Under the terms of the agreement, Barry Callebaut will supply Grupo Bimbo with up to 32,000 tonnes of chocolate products annually for its domestic market, through the compa- ny’s Mexican factories in Toluca and Monterrey.


Scientists from the Institute of Food Science and Technology and Nutrition (ICTAN) in Spain recently published a paper in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research about a study that sup- ports the idea that consuming cocoa helps to prevent intestinal complaints linked to oxidative stress. "Being exposed to different poisons in the diet like toxins, mutagens and procarcinogens, the intestinal mucus is very sus- ceptible to pathologies," said María Ángeles Martín Arribas, lead author of the study and a researcher at ICTAN. She said foods such as cocoa are rich in polyphenols, which seem to play an important role in protecting against disease. The full title of the paper is: ‘Cocoa-rich diet prevents

■ Cocoa prices have fallen because the industry is "well stocked" and the current crop is off to a "good start," according to Barry Callebaut. "This price decrease was due to the recent bumper crop in 2010-2011 and the good start of the current cocoa campaign, as well as financial investors taking short posi- tions and a generally well-stocked industry," said the company.


■ Demand for cocoa will exceed supplies by 94,000 tonnes in the 2011-2012 season, UK-based Marex Spectron Group claims. Global cocoa production will be 3.867 million tonnes, 70,000 tonnes lower than forecast in November, with smaller crops in West Africa, the London-based broker said in a report.
