Caribou Coffee to use only RA beans

The Rainforest Alliance says Caribou Coffee has become first major coffee company in the US to source 100 per cent of its coffee from farms certified by the alliance.

"Caribou Coffee’s achievement sets a shining example, demonstrating that it is entirely possible for compa-

nies to meet their sustainability goals," said Tensie Whelan, President of the Rainforest Alliance. "We are thrilled that our long- standing relationship with Caribou Coffee has helped to improve the livelihoods of coffee-farming commu- nities across the globe, while provid- ing consumers with high quality, sus- tainable coffee."

The Rainforest Alliance started working with Caribou Coffee in 2003. In April 2011, Caribou Coffee set an

ambitious goal of sourcing 100 per cent of the coffee used across all of its products and platforms from Rainforest Alliance certified farms. "Reaching 100 per cent certification is a significant accomplishment for Caribou Coffee," said Chad Trewick, Senior Director of Coffee and Tea at Caribou Coffee. "I’ve seen how com- munities thrive from working with the Rainforest Alliance, and I’m proud to say that all of our beans come from sustainable, healthy sources."

Production in Colombia, the world’s sec- ond-largest supplier of Arabica after Brazil, shrank to a 35-year low after excess rainfall, diseases and a lack of sunshine curbed yields. According to Bloomberg, the harvest fell 12 per cent to 7.81 million bags in 2011, the lowest level since 1976, from 8.92 million a year earlier. "It was totally unexpected," said Andres Jimenez, Head of International Sales at Interbolsa SA, Colombia’s largest brokerage. "We’re actually below 8 million? 8 million is disastrous." Farmers will have a "very hard time this year increasing production" if adverse weather persists, said Luis Munoz, head of FEDECAFE.
