SECURITY & PASSENGER SAFETY

David Thomasson, transportation business development manager for Northern Europe at Axis Communications, explains the advantages of real-time surveillance.

he capabilities of today’s network video cameras are very impressive, enabling transport authorities to create safer transit sys- tems and to keep traffi c running with as few un- necessary interruptions as possible. Deciding whether to or how to respond isn’t always easy, especially if the information received is vague.

Whether on-board a train, at the station or along the infrastructure, network video technology can make a big difference – giving crystal clear surveillance video in real-time, so that any chal- lenge can be confi dently and effi ciently handled to keep passengers, staff and property safe.

Traditionally, video from analogue security cameras is mainly used forensically by view- ing recordings of incidents after they have oc- curred. With a network-based video solution, real-time video from vehicles, stations and infrastructure can be monitored from any au- thorised location connected to the network, in- cluding via the internet and wirelessly.

Incidents can be detected immediately and viewed from the appropriate locations in re-

Alternatively, the higher resolution offered by network video cameras offers the option of greatly reducing the number of cameras re- quired to cover a particular scene, offering tre- mendous saving on installation and on-going power supply costs.

al-time to enable quick correct evaluation so that the right response is initiated. Response resources can access live images via laptops, PDAs etc. so that they know exactly what to expect upon arrival and can prepare the appro- priate response as the scene develops. Correct

As network video cameras can be viewed from anywhere, the same cameras can be used by various organisations within the transport community for their own specifi c needs. As well as for security, the same cameras can be utilised for business intelligence: people count- ing, passenger fl ows, and so on.
