Frank Wilson of Noble joined the OEC board of  from Indiana–he settled in Oklahoma after serving in the Army–a visit back home gave him the opportunity to enact a core principle among cooperatives: Cooperation Among Cooperatives. Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures. Wilson learned of a new meter reading technique employed by an Indiana co-op. Instead of depend- ing upon members to read their own meters and mail in meter cards, they hired co-op members to read meters in assigned territories. "I've always supported upgrades to help the service men. They need good equipment. You know, our guys don't climb many

poles anymore, it's too dangerous; they've got bucket trucks now. It's safer."

"I just care about the local people and what we can do, hands on," he says modestly. "I'm proud of the progress we've made. We've kept bills down through management and oversight. I'm proud of the automat- ic meter reading system. Now, I'm proud of the new building and the state-of-the-art operations center." Wilson, a retired mechanic and a widower, shows me his and his late wife's ceramics and woodworking workshops next to the RV he still takes camping. "We had 35 good years." He gives me a bluebird house he made after I tell him how much my daughter and mother like to bird watch. He says, "It protects them from the hawks." For 34 years Wilson has done the same for the members of Oklahoma Electric Cooperative.
