Badgers in the firing line

We now know that the government is preparing to have two pilot areas for the killing of badgers. The first one is 331 square kilometres in the counties of Gloucestershire and parts of Hereford and Worcestershire. Also a second pilot area consists of 288 square kilometres in Somerset.

This is despite science and common sense which says that this shooting of free running badgers will be inhumane and will surely be a risk to human life and very unlikely to reduce Bovine TB in cattle.

The shooting, planned for August/September of this year will divide communities, affect tourism and is likely to create new outbreaks of Bovine TB in adjoining dairy farms. Hundreds of badgers will yet again lose their lives for the sake of politics.

The Badger Protection League (www.badgerprotectionleague.com) is an umbrella website linking many organisations that are against the badger cull and also shows the number of celebrities who are joining together to promote awareness of what is about to happen.

The Badger Protection League is an up to date resource for meetings and events that are taking place and tells you how you can get involved and make a difference. However it only promotes peaceful and sensible protests. If we all work together, we can make a difference. 38 Degrees have their on-line petition running and we have plenty of forms. There are still many people who do not know what is going to happen in their own county. If you can help with the distribution of posters, car stickers and petition forms, do let us know. We will continue to do as much as we can to stop this slaughter.
