It’s a Secret - Shhhh!

With the cold winter weather, endless painting and maintenance work, a funny story brightens the day. It was one of our volunteers who gave us the opportunity of a little amusement.

Rupert the Fox

In early January, a very poorly fox was reported to us locally in East Huntspill.

When we arrived, he seemed to be having difficulty in walking and was therefore quite easy to catch. He obviously had an injury to his back and we thought he had an injury down his leg. We took him immediately to the vets and it was only once he was under anaesthetic, we realised that the ‘injury down the leg’ was just pus that was coming from the infected wound on his back. It had dried and was really difficult to remove.

The photograph tells the story of how much work had to be done to get down to the wound itself. With his wound cleaned and treated, it was time to come back to the centre. He was given pain relief and antibiotics and was eventually in a nice warm pen under a heat lamp. Even though he must have been feeling very sore, his supper disappeared very quickly! Within a couple of days the quiet fox, affectionately called Rupert Bear, had become a fox that growled, snapped and spat so he was feeling better.

Rupert has fully recovered now and is in one of the grassed enclosures until his fur grows again across his back. A very lucky fox to have been found when he was - he wouldn’t have survived for many more days.

The volunteer had unfortunately had a knee operation and was unable to move around very easily. Going into the room in the house where the printer was switched on, she (now there’s a clue!) heard clicking and thought that it was coming from under the settee.

Sliding into a precarious position, she looked underneath and saw a black form towards the back of the settee. Sure that she had an injured bat in her house - although it was hard for her to know how - she rang us to see if someone could come to its rescue. Simon was going that way and offered to attend.

Once he had retrieved the ceramic black mouse from under the settee and sorted out that the noise had come from the printer, the volunteer was totally embarrassed. We all make mistakes and it did give us something to chuckle about it!
