Is setting-up a home-based salon a good idea?
Audrey Heffernan
OPI Trainer, Hennessey Hair & Beauty
"When setting up a home-based beauty business, you should consider the location. This is very important because ideally you need to be in a built-up area where you are easy to find in order to run a busy salon. Then you must ask yourself the question, will you get the clientele in the location? And will it be worth it in the long term?"
"The biggest advantage of running your business from home is that you have no large overheads like rent, which is the biggest expenditure when running a salon. Also for yourself you have no travel expense to and from work.
"The only big con you would have to go against you is that some people would rather go to a salon to have treatments instead of going into your house. The key is to make it as comfortable as possible for the client. A nice relaxed atmosphere with candles and some soft music playing makes it nice and relaxing.
"Overall I do think it is a great idea to set up a home based beauty business. It is much more profitable in the long-run."

"As with every set-up there are always pros and cons to everything."
"If you are working from home you save on the set-up costs that would be involved if you were working from a salon, i.e. rent, and it leaves you more flexible with your working hours which means you can fit other jobs, kids and household duties in or adjust your work depending on the bookings you have. I would say that this is the most popular set-up for therapists with young children as it enables you to look after them, drop them off at school, and be around for them when you need them.
"One thing to consider however is that you won't get the advantage of walk-in customers, like you would when you have a salon in a popular location, which means you would rely solely on your own customer base and for happy clients spreading word of mouth, advertising or any referral or loyalty schemes you're offering.
"Both situations have their advantages and it's worth sitting down with a pen and paper to make a list and find out what suits you and your situation best or which route will get you your ultimate dream."

"There's no magic to starting a business, you don't need special talents, you don't even need loads of money."
"What you do need is perseverance, motivation, integrity, good health and the ability to work hard."
"Being self-employed allows you to capitalise on your ability and knowledge, develop your business skills and achieve the quality of life that you want.
"There are so many positive sides to running your own salon, such as being able to organise your own working hours, you are in control of your own destiny, you learn a lot, and you get a great sense of achievement.
"However, there are a few points to consider when starting a home-based salon, including why are you starting, which legal structure will you choose, what are your business skills, what funding do you have, who is your competition, the market place, and how to write a business plan. Finally, seek professional advice."
