In society today, sometimes a regular beauty regime just won't cut it for some of your clients. With such easy access to the Internet and celebrities sharing their 'secrets' to looking young or curing their skin complaints, clients are much more savvy to the treatment types out there.

For the client looking to step-up their results-driven treatments and regimes, Skin Needling is becoming increasingly popular. Skin Needling, or Micro-Needling or Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is intended to smooth wrinkles, improve acne scarring, as well as reduce the appearance of stretch marks. It is also sometimes used for the treatment of pigmentation or uneven skin tone.

Scars, wrinkles, stretch marks and uneven skin tone are all made worse by a lack in collagen and Skin Needling helps by encouraging the production of collagen in the skin. The process is carried out with a roller that is covered

with lots of tiny needles. The needles penetrate the upper layers of the skin. The 'damage' caused to the skin encourages the body to produce new collagen and elastin, which generates new skin cells to repair itself, resulting in the skin becoming thicker, plumper and more youthful. The procedure is more often used on the face, but it can also be used on other parts of the body, such as the thighs, to treat stretch marks.

The process of Skin Needling helps to effectively stimulate collagen formation, whilst at the same time providing a clear channel for products, such as serums and creams, to be effectively absorbed through the epidermis. "These channels significantly improve the penetration of active ingredients in the trans dermal solutions used in conjunction with Micro- needling," say Nimue Skin Technology. "The surrounding tissue remains healthy and the epidermal layers intact, thus inducing collagen. This effectively creates a very effective delivery system and rejuvenation treatment in one.

"Micro-needling on its own will produce collagen synthesis in approximately six

weeks and Micro-needling with trans dermal solutions will enhance remodelling of the skin with noticeable results sooner. This process of remodelling can continue for up to six to 12 months after the treatment."

Training is one of the most important things to consider when choosing to incorporate a skin needling treatment into your salon or Spa. Many companies offer the equipment required and training for the treatments to be carried out by fully qualified and trained therapists, however certain Skin Needling treatments can only be carried out by a doctor or nurse and this is usually dependant upon whether the roller is classed as a medical grade dermal roller and the length of the needles used to puncture the skin.

If you want to offer Skin Needling as a treatment, you can either choose to train in a treatment suitable to be carried out by therapists, or you can invite a doctor or nurse into the salon to carry out medical grade Skin Needling and book clients' appointments within these clinic times.
