A similar service is offered to iiaa salons and clinics, using the Visia Skin Analysis machine. Salons stocking the Environ range are encouraged to hold skin analysis events, which the iiaa offer free of charge to support stockists. They are hosted in-salon by a team of specialist skin consultants and are designed to help create customised skin care regimes for your clients while dramatically increasing product sales and building customer loyalty. There are two types of events: the Skin Analysis Consultation and the Environ Taster Experience.

Skin Analysis imaging from the iiaa.

Face Mapping® is based upon the division of the face, neck and chest area into 14 zones, each with its own set of unique problems and needs - taking its lead from Traditional Chinese Medicine. The zones allow you to examine, observe and make notations pertaining to every inch of the face - even behind the ears, where shampoo, cleansers or other product may accumulate, causing irritation. The analysis integrates a visual exam under high magnification, tactile exam to locate hot areas (indicating congestion), milia forming beneath the skin but not yet visible, oily and dry spots and so on. The record allows both you and your client to observe and respond effectively to changes in skin condition and to select the appropriate treatments and home use products, creating a customised programme.

Bringing the Face Mapping® concept right into the 21st century, Dermalogica have recently launched Face Mapping for the iPad, designed specifically to replace the need for a paper-based prescription sheet. It records skin analysis and provides tools like the product directory, notes and zone wheels. However, the App does not make product recommendations as this is very much your role.

Alternatively, Eve Taylor's Systems of Analysis is a form of Oriental Analysis which was designed by Eve Taylor herself when she first started teaching her Clinical Aromatherapy technique in 1968.

Systems of Analysis is a unique tool that enables you to look at the client as a whole. Just by observing and collecting data from client record cards and by using the System of Analysis opens up vast options of therapies prescribed specifically to your client.

The principle behind Systems of Analysis is to treat the person as a whole, analyse with a 3D approach to the body, and to take into account the client's history including diet, lifestyle, occupation and family history. This then allows you to decide what Analytical Type your client is and then prescribe specific treatments, tailor-made to suit them.

Taking on technology

Today, analysis of the skin is not always about traditional methods, and an in- depth look - not necessary indicating potential underlying health issues - can be achieved using the latest technologies.

Antera 3D™, created by Miravex, a spin- off of Trinity College Dublin, is based on an advanced optical technology, which allows you to view the skin in two and three dimensions along with providing a multi- spectral analysis of the dermis and epidermis.

This system, available from Tekno Surgical, enables you to analyse melanin levels, acne rosacea, facial redness, 'broken veins' and wrinkles in detail. This powerful tool in evaluating skin damage means you can monitor and quantify improvements over time, thus proving the efficacy of your treatments.

"With Antera 3D™, all the elements of ageing skin, and those features associated with attractiveness, including skin smoothness, clarity, and evenness are visualised and measured accurately," comments Dr. Peter Prendergast, Director at the Venus Medical Beauty Centre in Dublin, who use the system. "Already, Antera 3D™ has some exciting applications and I am sure it will prove invaluable to cosmetic doctors, surgeons and dermatologists all over the world."

During the Skin Analysis Consultation one of the team of regional iiaa skin care experts visits the salon, bringing the Visia Complexion Analysis machine. The salon schedules 45 appointments for eight clients to be seen. This highly advanced system looks at problem areas below the surface, such as sun damage, hyper- pigmentation, broken capillaries, wrinkles and blocked pores.

Powerful imaging technology scans the skin and even allows you to artificially 'age' clients, showing them how they could look without proper skin care. The skin analysis advisor recommends products for use at home and in-salon treatments, helping to boost product sales and deliver more focused treatment programmes.

During the Environ Taster Experience clients have their skin analysed with the Visia machine, and the skin care expert performs a 20-minute 'taster' facial. The treatment will be tailor-made to address specific skin concerns that have been highlighted in the scan. This introduces clients to Environ treatments and encourages them to book a full course. Salon owners book six one-hour slots for clients for the day of the event.

So when you're next holding a client consultation consider whether you're fully equipped to offer them the best you can. Does your client fully believe in the treatments or products you are recommending to them, or would your consultations, therefore resulting sales, benefit from the added support of proven skin analysis findings?
