Center. T is year’s event, called “30 Minutes to Life,” takes place March 24 at Preferred Fitness in Germantown.

Erdman is asking individuals to get pledges from family, friends and co-workers and hit the gym equipment of their choice for a half-hour workout. Erdman’s friend, Guy Powell, has volunteered to host a bench press competition at the event. Entrants make a $20 donation and the person who can press his or her own weight the most repetitions will take home the trophy.

“A common belief is that the mentally ill are dangerous or that those who are struggling with addiction are diff erent from you and me,” Erdman said. “But that’s not the case. Yet negative stereotypes still oſt en keep people from seeking treatment.”

Last year, Erdman launched a benefi t event to help increase awareness, while raising funds for patient education at the

ou’ve heard the adage, “perception is reality,” but don’t tell that to Chris Erdman, a Certifi ed Social Worker

“Exercise is important to good health and an important aspect to any type of recovery,” Erdman said, “and because so many people exercise, this seemed like a good way to get them involved.” Funds raised will be used to acquire DVDs, workbooks and other resources for patients, and augment staff participation in seminars. “Everything staff members do to enhance their knowledge has a direct bearing on the patients and keeps us cutting-edge,” explained Erdman.

Erdman isn’t a professional fundraiser. But when he saw a need, he didn’t hesitate to beat the drum for the cause.

“People who are chemically dependent and mentally ill are so misunderstood,” he said. “You see fundraisers all over for various causes, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fundraiser for this population. I had no idea what to expect the fi rst year, and it was a lot more work than I imagined, but it was well worth it.”

To participate in the “30 Minutes to Life” fundraiser or to designate a giſt to the Mental Health Center, call Community Memorial Foundation at 262-257-3760. ■
